The history of Vicksburg, Mississippi, is a long and complex one. The city was founded by the French in 1763 as a trading post on the Mississippi River. It grew rapidly during the American Revolution and became an important military town, becoming the capital of Mississippi in 1799. After the war, Vicksburg experienced a period of growth and prosperity as a commercial center. However, it was hit hard by Reconstruction efforts and declined thereafter. In 1894, Vicksburg was renamed Jackson after General Andrew Jackson’s victory over Confederate forces at First Bull Run. In 1961, it became the capital of Mississippi again following passage of the statehood amendment to the United States Constitution. As part of its preparations for Expo '98 in Paris, France, Mississippi made plans to modernize its infrastructure and erected a new information technology center in downtown Vicksburg called "Ahead". This facility served as both an industrial park and research center for many years until it burned down in 2002. Despite these challenges, Vicksburg has been an important cultural center throughout its history. Its rich architecture and history have made it a popular tourist destination; however, it remains largely poverty-ridden despite repeated investment into redevelopment programs.

In 1864, Vicksburg was the largest city in Mississippi. It was also one of the most important military and political centers in the Confederacy. The city was founded by General John C. Frémont in 1821 as a trading post on the Yazoo River. By 1865, Vicksburg had become an important military and political center in the Confederacy because of its strategic location on both sides of the river. Vicksburg was known for its production of cottonseed oil, which played a large role in Confederate war efforts. The city also supplied goods and services to Confederate forces throughout the war. In addition to its importance as a military and political center, Vicksburg also served as a major manufacturing center during the war. This included production of artillery shells, ammunition, vehicles, and other components for Confederate troops and ships. After the war ended, Vicksburg struggled to recover from its wartime injuries. However, it eventually regained some of its former glory thanks to its new economic prosperity. In addition to these successes, Vicksburg also experienced several tragedies during this time period such as an attack by Union forces that killed dozens of people in 1865 or an accident that caused many deaths when a steamboat sunk while trying to navigate through floodwaters caused by Hurricane Isaac

One such belt was called a girdle because it was worn around the waist like a belt but had two loops at the front which allowed guns to be attached directly to it without having to go through another holster (Goudreau 1984). The girdle was also used for other purposes such as keeping food and water cold or holding coins (Fletcher 1988). During this time, handguncarrying became more common so soldiers began looking for ways to keep their handguns close by without having them hang off their hips or stuck under their armor (Moses 1959). One such solution was developed by Sir John Hawkins who invented what is now known as an open-backed holster (Wade 1990). Hawkins designed his holster so that handguns could easily be attached directly to his belt without having to go through another holster. His invention solved several problems that previousHolster designs did not address including making pistol carry easier and allowing gunmen to keep their handguns close by while they fought (Fletcher 1988). One problem that open-back holsters caused was that they left pistols hanging off someone’s hips which made them difficult to use while running or moving about town (Norman 1932). In response, some designers decided to create repositories where handguns could rest temporarily before being re-attachedto their owners’ belts (Dunn 1945; Fenton 1975; Weisman 1977) . In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant was appointed Commander in Chief of the Union army and began his military campaign to retake Vicksburg, Mississippi from Confederate forces. In order to capture the city, General Grant ordered his army to march through a bluegrass valley that served as a reconnaissance trail. The Union army passed through the valley on July 4th, 1865 and discovered an abandoned Confederate fortification known as Battery Wagner. The fortifications were later used by Union troops as cover while they attacked the city from behind. On July 5th, 1865, General Grant's army reached the outskirts of Vicksburg and began their assault on the city walls. The assault was successful and soon after, Vicksburg had fallen into Union hands.
