The Battle of Vicksburg was fought on July 4, 1863, in Mississippi between Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate troops under Confederate general Robert E. Lee. The battle resulted in Union forces achieving a strategic victory by crushing the Confederate army and capturing or driving off its capital, Vicksburg. Vicksburg had been an important island in the Mississippian heartland for centuries before it became a battleground of the American Civil War. It was first settled by European settlers in 1795, and grew rapidly as a slave-growing cotton plantation economy. In 1821, Vicksburg became the capital of Jackson County; it remained so until 1861 when Jackson County was merged into Mississippi Territory (later Alabama) to form northern Alabama. In 1862, Union forces were moving southward from their winter encampment at Cairo, Illinois, towards Montgomery Province in Alabama to take control of that state’s resources and citizens before they could be used to support Confederate resistance efforts elsewhere in the Confederacy. On April 12th General Grant received orders from President Abraham Lincoln to march his army through central Mississippi towards Mobile Bay on September 15th in order to capture or drive off Confederate armies entrenched therewerds along the Gulf coast. On July 4th 1863 Union forces moved forward from Cairo towards Meridian while also reinforcing Generals Jubal Early and Edward Bragg upriver along the Yazoo River valley near Tupelo King Island; these manouevres were intended as an enveloping attack against Confederates who had evacuated Vicksburg for fear that it would fall into Union hands if they stayed put. At 6am on July 4th United States artillery opened fire upon Confederate positions around town; this shelling continued until 8pm EDT with no resulting casualties on either side despite intense hand-to-hand combat which lasted well into the night. At 11am EDT General Grant ordered his men to continue advance without waiting for further orders; within two hours they had reached Fort Donelson where they began Siege operations against rebel fortifications designed solely to resist any assault by regular United States troops brought together for this purpose under Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet – one of Jefferson Davis’ key commanders during the war – rather than contribute effectively to overall battlefield strategy or provide cover for US soldiers advancing inland across open country formations typical of infantry engagements during wartime period
