Grant’s forces. In 1821 cotton mills were built around town to exploit new land grants issued for cotton production within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). However, these mills failed due to low yields and competition from newer mills established in Jackson and other nearby towns; also plantation owners began growing so much cotton that they outgrew their original land grants and began issuing larger parcels. This increased demand caused prices for cotton to increase 50% from 1800 to 1830; accordingly, plantersacre values quadrupled between 1800 and 1830 while slaveowners only increased their holdings by about 7%. Cotton production peaked at 1 million bales/day in 1830 but then declined gradually due both to technological advances linked with global trade as well as disease brought over with travelers aboard ships docking at Mobile Bayou before sailing back home; moreover, population growth slowed down permanently after 1835 because slavery ceased being profitable outside of major urban centers such as Memphis et al.. After numerous failed attempts beginning in 1840-1845 Confederate General Robert Ewell decided upon invading Arkansas under Jackson’s command because he believed that Mexican agents operating within Texas were aiding American rebels – primarily southern white men – against him. On April 9–10th 1863 General Ewell's army crossed overland from Tennessee into Alabama without battle losing any soldiers except for one man killed on April 11th near Cullman Fields; nevertheless this event demonstrates how vulnerable Confederate armies felt without railroads or supply lines northward into Union territory On July 4th 1863 Federal General Edwin Ayer's cavalry column attacked Confederate artillery positions at Missionary Ridge near present day Tupelo (Mississippi); accordingly following this engagement Confederate General Beauregard made an unsuccessful attempt to retreat across Iuka Bridge opposite Tupelo whereupon Ayer ordered his troops unsuccessfully pursuit In December 1861 Union Admiral David Dixon Porter delivered an ultimatum requiring Confederates surrendering all these points along Mobile Bayou: Pensacola (Florida), Chickasaw Bluffs (Alabama), Grand Gulf (Mississippi), Red River Valley (North Dakota) & Memphis (& all adjacent areas including Natchez & Alexandria) In addition he demanded unconditional payment of $5 million plus arms bounties should be offered if captured Confederates not handedover immediately
