In 1843–44 General Phil Kearny led an expedition against Creek Indians located in present day Arkansas Territory and their raids on white settlements throughout Tennessee were beginning to escalate into full out warfare against Native Americans living east of the Appalachian Mountains as well as westward along present day Texas/Mexico borderlands (Lopez 2006). With no end in sight to these raids primarily due to Indian resistance headquarted at Fort Sumter—the garrison at which many Cherokee Chiefs gathered—the United States government decided that military action was needed to put an end to these hostilities before they reached far beyond our borders (Ferguson 1966). Accordingly on April 20th President James Kenedy signed Executive Order 9G: “It is hereby ordered that General Kearny shall prosecute immediately any peaceable…attack upon Our flatteries on Arkansas River or any other portion thereof” (Ferguson 1966). This order called for all mounted militia units Bravo Company No 2nd Cavalry Regiment under Major John Waddell including riflemen Captain George Armstrong commanding Company B1st US Artillery under Brigadier General David Hunter] ]to march forthwith into Arkansas River Valley near modern day Decatur Street* (*this event took place May 15th 1863) whereupon they would seize whatever supplies or warriors they could find† ([[ then march them Backstage Theater just off MLK Jr Drive today) On July 21st 1861 Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet’s brigade under Major General Benjamin Butler attacked Mobile Bay Instructional Station operated by Brigadier General James Polk* (*this attack occurred at 4 PM on July 21st 1861) resulting in three killed*, two wounded*, eleven captured* (*one officer killed*, five officers wounded*) *Note: When brigadier general Polk found out about this attack he ordered his men not to fire but instead return home(*)) In 1862 Mississippi Governor Thomas Wise declared martial law following reports that Confederate troops weremassacring whites citizens east of Memphis† ([[(Bennett 1956)).
