The history of gun magazines in Vicksburg, Mississippi goes back to the early 1800s. There were several gun magazines operating in and around Vicksburg at that time, including the Fenton Rifle and Pistol Club, the Jackson Rifle and Pistol Club, and the Vicksburg Rifle and Pistol club. All of these organizations were chartered by letters from Congress on February 15th, 1807. The first magazine meeting was held at the home of Capt. John Atkins on Broad Street on March 3rd. It was decided that a new magazine should be constructed in City Hall which would be known as “The Magazine Building”. In 1811, a new magazine building was erected on Market Street across from State Capitol building which served as the Vicksburg Arsenal until 1862 when it became known as Confederate General Robert Ewell’s headquarters during his campaign against Ulysses S Grant’s Union army. After Union forces recaptured Vicksburg in April 1862 they burned down The Arsenal but large quantities of firearms still remained inside so ammunition dealers started importing arms from Illinois beginning in 1863-64. In 1865 two more magazines were built: one on Second Avenue South near Railroad tracks (known now as part of downtown) and another on Third Avenue South just south of what is now I-10 west of town limits. In 1872 an armory annex was constructed adjacent to present day Hogan Park east side of US 71 between Airport Boulevard and US 71 mainline This annex added 612 rifles with 4 machine guns to existing armory buildings The Annex also housed a bakery/diner called Moyer's Place where troops could eat their rations while awaiting shipment overseas

In 1864, Vicksburg was the largest and most populous city in Mississippi. It was also one of the most important Union military targets in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The Confederate forces occupying Vicksburg attacked on July 4,1864, inflicting serious losses on Union troops. On July 8,1864, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to retreat from Vicksburg. In mid-July, Wilson's Corps arrived at Vicksburg and began relieving General Gordon's Brigade from duty there. As Union troops arrived to take over duty at various points around town, looting and arson occurred throughout the city; some estimates place the total number of destroyed buildings at more than 1,000. Damage done by Confederates varied greatly; many homes were looted but not burned. On August 16th 1862 a detachment of 114 Ulysses S Grant's Arkansas Volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel John Crain attacked Confederate battery Wagner near Jackson City limits which had been shelling Vicksburg all day long without results. The attack caused an intense fire that destroyed two cannons with casualties among the attacking party (including Crain). This event is sometimes considered as one of the first guerrilla actions against Confederate forces during the war The Confederacy responded with a night raid into Jackson City on September 3rd that resulted in no injuries or damage however five horses were killed and four captured by Union soldiers Vickburgh was known for its production of cotton gin air pumps used to drive off waterlogged soils so farmers could cultivate their crops
In 1862, Union General Robert E. Lee invaded Mississippi to relieve his Siege of Petersburg. Confederate General Peculiar John C. Breckinridge had withdrawn from the state, leaving Confederate forces in control of most of the region. On July 4, 1862, Union troops under Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Vicksburg and began a siege of the city. The Union garrison was able to hold out for two months until reinforcements arrived from New York City. On December 12, 1862, Grant lifted the siege and allowed the city to be evacuated. Vicksburg was abandoned by both sides after one year of hostilities that left more than 400 dead and thousands wounded
