Grant routed Confederate forces commanded by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Battle Price near Corinth resulting in Forrest's withdrawal from the battlefront and evacuation to Mobile Alabama where he planned to reorganize his command under new leadership. At Battle Hays Bridge on July 3rd Confederate general Pemberton ordered Brigadier General James Longstreet to assault northward upriver towards Corinth while Hood's army defended south against Federal cavalryman led by George Buel (later Field Marshal). At about 5 p.m., Longstreet's brigade reached Hancock Bog which lay east of present day Highway 13 between I-10 and US 61/MS 97 junction just west of downtown Vicksburg Less than an hour later however Longstreet's brigade encountered strong resistance from Hood's infantry regiment led by Colonel John Brown who repulsed all attacks with homemade cannons fitted with quick-firing cartridges that caused many casualties among both armies; longstreet himself lost two horses killed outright and four men captured or killed subsequent engagements resulted in only six soldiers being taken prisoners including Brown Although some sources claim that Brown then retreated back down river towards Tupelo rather than engaging again with Longstreet within 30 minutes after reaching Hancock Bog - other sources suggestBrown instead decided not pursue further following reports that Rebels were gathering reinforcements northeast along Corinth River; ultimately leading to Sherman's march through eastern Mississipp
