Vicksburg is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Mississippi. It lies on the banks of the Chickasaw River, east of Corinth. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The first Vicksburg post office was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it closed in 1865. The town sprang up around a small fortifications built by Confederate General Robert E. Lee to protect his army from Union cavalry raids during the height of the Civil War. In 1864, Confederate General Pemberton moved his forces to Vicksburg after being forced southward by Union General Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of southern Louisiana; Vicksburg became part of Confederate territory and its citizens voted to secede from the Union as soon as they received word of Pemberton's move. The Confederacy abandoned Vicksburg following the surrender of Confederate General James Longstreet at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The City Council Building was built in 1902 and is still standing today; it has been used for various purposes including government meetings and weddings since then. The Courthouse Annex also dates back to 1902 and is still standing today; it has served as a library for both city residents and visitors since its inception In 1933, Vicksburg experienced one of the most devastating earthquakes in United States history when an 8-magnitude magnitude earthquake struck just outside town limits near Jacksonport with damage done to churches, homes and businesses throughout central Mississippi along with portions of Alabama and Tennessee A $2 million federal grant helped rebuild many aspects of downtown Vicksburg following this quake but also started a campaign against redlining which restricted African-American access to housing throughout much of Mississippi beginning in the late 1940s

Vicksburg, Mississippi was founded in 1814 as a small town on the banks of the Yazoo River. It quickly became an important center of slave trade and cotton plantations in the southeastern United States. The city was sacked by Confederate forces in 1863 and finally surrendered to Union forces three years later. Vicksburg is now a museum and tourist destination, popular with visitors from all over the world. The history of Vicksburg began with its location at the confluence of two major rivers: the Yazoo andMississippi Rivers. This allowed for easy transportation of goods and people between these regions. The city also became an important commercial center due to its location upstream from Mobile Bay, which made it an ideal spot for shipping goods and supplying soldiers during wartime. In 1814, Vicksburg was founded by General John Cushing as a small town on the Bank of the Yazoo River opposite present-day Jackson, Mississippi. By 1830, however, Vicksburg had become an important stop on both slave routes traveled downriver from Alabama and Georgia to be sold into slavery along with their families. In addition to being an economic hub for local farmers, Vickersburgh also became one of several strategic locations used by Confederate Forces during the Civil War because it lay near key military positions such as Jacksonport House on Mobile Bayou (present day Gadsden Landing) and Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor (now Mount Pleasant). Although skirmishes took place throughout 1862 between Union troops led by General Ulysses S Grant and Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell, general capitulation occurred at Appomattox Court House less than 1 week after hostilities ceased on April 9th 1865 following Grant’s victory at Gettysburg National Battlefield northwest of Richmond Virginia. Today, parts of downtown Vickersburghuten remain intact including Federal Street where merchants once located their businesses before Mobile County annexed them in 1871; State Street which still includes many antebellum homes; while other areas have been redeveloped into mixed uses such as retail corridors flanked by luxury condos/apartments while remaining attached to old warehouses or factory complexes that served as public works projects during this time period such as Pascagoula Navy Yard (1892-1915), Biloxi Shipbuilding Company (1911-1920), Northshore Cottonseed Mill (1893-1960), Renaissance Development Corporation – current complex housing Corinthian Colleges – former warehouse complex known locally as “The Plant” that sat vacant until it was leased out for residential use in early 2017; more recently completed is redevelopment called Golden Triangle which features office buildings/retailers atop two high rise development sites totaling 653 units/condos overlooking downtown riverfront skyline containing river views from every window within walls; ongoing renovation is underway adjacent Riverside Park featuring multiple large events venues includingasexhibition space formerly used for concerts & balls prior to demolition in early 2018 [reopening date TBD]; park features pavilions designed by internationally acclaimed landscape architects Edward Lasseter & Partners who were responsible for creating masterpieces such as Walt Disney World’s Epcot Centerworld theme park near Orlando Florida]
