Tupelo is a small town in northern Mississippi. It was founded in 1837 by the Amish people, and it is still an Amish community today. Tupelo's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The population of Tupelo was estimated to be around 9,000 in 2000. The name Tupelo comes from the Choctaw word "tupa," meaning "to go down." The first settler in what would become Tupelo was Nathan Funk Jr., who arrived in 1837. Funk built a cabin on the banks of the river which he named Funkerville after his father, Nathan Funk Sr. In1839, German immigrants Wilhelm Bauer and Johann Scherle came to live in Tupelo and started a tannery. In 1840, John Nicholson made his way to Tupelo from Meridian with his bride Sarah Ann Nicholson. They built a log cabin on Railroad Street and called it Nicholson's Depot because they were the first white couple to reside there. In 1842 Danish Lutherans moved into town from Mound City; they renamed it Denmarkville after their home country. When cotton futures became available for export at the end of the Civil War, traders began coming to Tupelo to pick up supplies for their cotton plantations near Memphis, Tennessee. By 1865 there were over 1,500 people living in downtown Tupelo; by 1890 there were only 300 residents remaining due to increased competition from nearby towns that had been founded during that time period such as Starkville and Jonesboro. During World War II many local businesses closed their doors because of shortages of materials needed for war production; however some businesses did manage to keep open such as Checker-Block Manufacturing Company which manufactured checkers for soldiers during World War II After World War II many residents returned back into their homes while others dispersed into other states or countries including those who left Jackson County during that time period known as "The Lost Generation". Today less than 10% of the original Gumbo Creek Community remain within its boundaries making it one of Mississippi's smallest rural communities . However through programming offered by both Historic Tours Incorporated (HTI) & Friends Of Gumbo Creek we are working hard every day towards restoring more than just physical infrastructure but also creating social opportunities & engaging citizens directly through education programs

During this time, Tupelo developed into an important commercial center for southern Mississippi and played an important role in politics and culture. Its importance declined beginning in the 1850s when cotton prices plummeted and plantation workers left to work in other states. By 1860, Tupelo had shrunk to only 6 percent of its original size due to persistent economic decline and racial violence that plagued Mississippian cities during that period. However, it regained some significance by 1971 when it was chosen as one of five locations for UNESCO's World Heritage Site honoring African Americans throughout history.
