Tupelo is a small city in the US state of Mississippi. The population was 11,491 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Hardeman County. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Tupelo was founded by white settlers in 1819 and named after Sam Houston's father, "Tupelo" (a Creek word meaning "old man"). A post office called Tupelo was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1830, German immigrants Fritsch and Kapp founded a trading post on the present-day east bank of the Yazoo River near what is now downtown Tupelo. They named their community Friedland because they could not find any land to give them an establishment name that would sound European-sounding. The first permanent settler in what would become Tupelo was Heinrich Heckel, who arrived in 1832 from Jena, Germany with his family and set up a farmstead on land he had acquired from a Native American chief. He named his farmstead Heckel Landing after himself and his wife Hilda (Hedwig). Heinrich Heckel started to purchase more acreage around town from fellow Germans over time until he had all of hardwood forested acres within sight of downtown where he built his home for $100 per year in 1840–41; today's downtown area includes most or all of this property along 3 streets: Main Street between Market and First Avenues; Second Avenue between State Streets and Eighth Avenue; and Third Avenue between State Streets and Ninth Avenue). In 1845, Hardeman County were created from Jackson County when it split off from Mississippi Territory following the Mexican–American War. Friedland began to decline as businesses moved away from its location because transportation became available through Memphis rather than traveling downriver to visit him every day like he used to do since there were noboats running downriver then! In 1857Hardeman County lost its charter due to lack of support so it reverted back into Jackson County which abolished it again just one year later! The last commercial transaction at Friedland took place on October 16th 1861 when Reuben Pemberton bought goods brought over by Wm Blythe under license from Gadsden businessman John Sitton for $5 sterling! That same day also saw the first birth recorded for modern day Tupelo when infant Moses Beasley was christened by Revd Samuel Brown Sr.# revivalist activities increased greatly here during this time with many people coming ashore looking for new ways to put their faith into action! #Moses Beasley born October 16th 1861

Tupelo, Mississippi is a town in Jackson county, Mississippi. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the largest community in Jackson County and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the state. Tupelo's rich history can be found from its founding as a trading post by French traders in 1816 to its current role as an agricultural center. The first Europeans to visit Tupelo were French traders who founded the post on April 11, 1816. The traders named their outpost "Tupelo" after an area of land east of Mobile Bay on which they had seen Indian villages. In 1819, Englishman George Stephenson discovered oil reserves on Signal Hill, just south of Tupelo. This led to increased demand for cotton and other goods produced by local farmers and businessman John Mosely became one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Jackson County during this time period. By 1840, much of what is now Jackson County had been surveyed and platted including what are now Tupelo and parts of nearby Meridian and Jefferson counties. During the early 1800s several Creek Indians killed three white men working north from Mobile Bay onshore along present-day Alabama state line; these events are generally thought to have ignited a series of Indian attacks against white settlers located within modern-day Alabama that continued until about 1870 when all such attacks stopped with treaty settlements signed between American Indian chiefs and American military officers representing Ulysses S Grant (1822-1889). A new courthouse was built in 1865 around designs by architect Jno. Hutton Jr.. It burned down in 1889 but was rebuilt with Italianate elements by architects Edward Ladd & Sons under direction of Governor Neely Edwards (1873-1927). The building served as both a courthouse and jail until it burned down again in 1959; it has since been replaced by a new courthouse complex that opened in 2003. A significant event associated with Tupelo during this time was World War I when General John Fenton (1863-1945) arrived there as commander of XV Corps to lead Operation Crossroads which involved supply runs across enemy lines into France for Allied war efforts; he is buried at Veterans Memorial Park near campus
