Tupelo, Mississippi is a city in central Mississippi. The population was 17,872 at the 2000 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Rankin County and the only municipality in Rankin County. It was founded in 1837 by Choctaw Indians as part of the Natchez Purchase from France. The first post office in Tupelo was established on July 25, 1837, and initially served a small neighborhood near the present day courthouse. The name for this early outpost was "Pritchard's Fort". In 1840, an act of Congress designated Tupelo as the capital of Rankin County after it had been proposed by Representative James Fenton and approved by President John Quincy Adams. The city became an important railroad junction due to its location on both National Road (now US 71) and Mobile & Alabama Railroad tracks. In 1845, cotton prices collapsed following a severe drought that swept much of America. As a result, many southeastern tenant farmers left their plantations to find work in Tupelo during this time period. During World War II, Tupelo played an important role as one of four crucial military transportation points along I-10 between Memphis and Birmingham, Alabama; Additionally it furnished goods and services to soldiers stationed throughout Sherman’s Army Movement southward into Georgia during World War II including prisoner-of-war camps at Saylorsville and White Sands airfields southwest of Tupelo – operations which were also responsible for saving over 2 million lives during that conflict alone . On November 5th 1966 several bombings occurred within miles of each other at two different locations in Jackson County killing three people including Mayor Davenport who had earlier opposed efforts to liberalize Jackson County government . This event has come to be known as “the Jackson Three” . After years full investigation no clear motive or suspect has ever been identified however some theories suggest political instability or personal vendettas being behind these acts
Tupelo was founded in 1814 by the French and English. The town sat on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River and became known for its fertile land and strategic location. Tupelo prospered as a commercial center during the antebellum period, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1865. The town was rebuilt, but declined thereafter. In 2002, Tupelo was named a National Historic Landmark for its importance in American musical history.
