Tupelo is a town in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,654 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Wilkinson County were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who founded a trading post on the east bank of the Choctaw River in 1797. They named it "Pelican Point". In 1811, Spanish colonists from Louisiana arrived and built a fort at nearby Mound Bayou which they called San Francisco de la Nuca (Spanish for "San Francisco of the Nuca"). The fort served as an outpost for trade with Native Americans along the river and its tributaries. In 1816, Englishman John Marshall purchased land east of present-day Tupelo from the Chickasaws and began to build a plantation there known as Marshall's Landing. He sold his land to General Andrew Jackson in 1824 after winning elections as president of the United States. Jackson moved his family to Tupelo in 1830 after being elected Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President over Andrew Johnson. He soon became interested in farming and development around Tupelo, issuing grants to individuals and businesses that developed downtown streetscape, churches, schools, cotton plantations, stores (including one owned by James Keesler), baseball diamonds, hotels—and even an opera house! By 1840, Tupelo had become one of Mississippi's most important towns with over 100 residents living in dwellings ranging from log cabins to gabled brick buildings seen today throughout much of downtown including State Capitol Park on Harrison Street overlooking Interstate 20/ 31 southbound lanes). In 1896–97 during Reconstruction following Civil War Reconstruction policies by President Grover Cleveland that sought African American suffrage through new state constitutions rather than via congressional acts providing voting rights to freed slaves – then-Tupelo Mayor Wm Hanks signed legislation creating Municipal Court No 2 which prosecuted misdemeanors such as vagrancy or drunkenness within city limits without indictment or trial before justices thereof; this court continued until 1907 when mayoral act removed all charges against citizens except those involving public mischief or obstruction...Eugene Griffith filmed his 1925 propaganda short film "What Price Glory?" about life atMarshall's Landing during this time period

Tupelo is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is home to the Tupelo Agricultural and Mechanical College. The town was founded in 1848 by General Robert E. Lee and his wife Lucy as a small community on the banks of the Yazoo River. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "the great chief." The first white person to live in Tupelo was James Balfour who came with his family in 1824 from Glasgow, Scotland. He occupied a cabin on what is now US-92 south of Tupelo and farmed until 1827 when he moved to a cabin near present-day Pascagoula Street. In 1830 he married Ann Gregory and they started farming there until their Removal westward in 1839 when they became part of the Alabama Colonization Society which settled land west of Mobile Bayou along the Gulf Coast.. They had six children: James (1831 - 1916), Mary (1833 - 1901), Andrew (1835 - 1925), Rachelle (1838 - 1924) Eleazer (1841 - 1942) and Johnathan Balfour (1845 - 1917). In 1840 Colonel Nathaniel Huddleston established an academy for blacks called Blacksmiths Institute then Spartanburg Academy before moving it to its current location on State Route 93 about two miles east of downtown Tupelo where it has operated continuously since 1865. It served as both an educational institution for black people living within white society as well as providing vocational training for whites working in the local black industry.. In 1861 John Sibley arrived from Illinois with his family settling around what is now US-412 north of town center prior to Battle Creek Campaign where he led Confederate forces against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant . Aftermath including death or capture of many soldiers resulted in withdrawal by Union forces back into Mississippi Territory resulting in surrender at Vicksburg . On July 30th 1863 during battle at Bridgeport Landing near present day Meridian John Singleton killed five Union Officers including Major General David Hunter while leading Confederate cavalry charge resultanting into committal proceedings that lasted several days longer than usual due to implications surrounding this event considered treasonous behavior by some within Union ranks

The town reached its peak popularity in the 1920s and 1930s with its large cotton fields, but has since lost its prominent place in Mississippi history.
