Tupelo is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Tupelo was Elijah Hicks on a plantation near present day Corinth. Hicks and his family were among the original residents of Jackson County when it was founded by the British in 1812. He erected two small cabins on an old swampy tract that he called "Hicks' Swamp." In 1827, James Troup bought land in what is now Hancock County from Hicks for $1,000. Troup built a grist mill and other mills around 1687 on the confluence of the Chickasaw and Yazoo rivers. In 1827 he sold his interest in these mills to John Pugh for $5,000. Pugh operated them until 1830 when he sold them to Ebenezer Bowen for $10,000. Bowen renamed them "Bowen's Mills". The name change may have been due to business partnerships with James Davenport & Sons (1814-1881) who had a flour mill at nearby Moline which gave Tupelo its early nickname "Davenport's Milltown". In 1830 Samuel Hubbard purchased Bowen's Mills from Ebenezer Bowen and continued operations as Hubbard Manufacturing Company under several different names until 1840 when it became known as Hubbard & Howe Manufacturing Company again under various ownership changes until 1850 when it became known as Bowman Bros., Incorporated . Around 1860 Daniel Boone donated land to become Knoxville Cemetery which served as burial ground for many pioneers including Elijah Hicks and others from Tupelo who died between 1793-1876 There are many civic organizations still active such as The Salvation Army Chapel which opened its doors in 1947
Tupelo was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on the Yazoo River. In 1832, Tupelo became the seat of Jackson's governorship. The town had a population of about 1,000 when it was burned by the Union forces during the Civil War. Tupelo rebuilt and grew to become an important center for cotton production and commerce during Reconstruction. The town declined following the end of Reconstruction and experienced significant Decline both economically and socially in the late 19th century until it regained some prosperity in the early 20th century.
