Tupelo is a town in Bibb County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,262 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Bibb County and home to the main branch of the Mississippi postal service as well as numerous small businesses. Its Main Street runs along what once was Yazoo River waterfront. The first inhabitants of Tupelo were Choctaw and Creek Indians who arrived in 1796 from Georgia and erected their village on land that now forms part of Pryor Township. A school was built there in 1801 by Reverend John Cochran with help from General Andrew Jackson, then United States Commander-in-Chief in Mississippi Territory. In 1810, Colonel Robert Ewing established a military post here and named it for his predecessor - "Ewing's Fort". At this time Tupelo consisted of about sixty homes and one store. It was during this time that cotton cultivation began to spread through upper Mississippi Valley and Tupelo became an important center for planter life. In 1821, pioneer Drury Hinton organized a Baptist Church here which soon became America's first black church. In 1865, the last slave owner in Lauderdale County (now Quitman) sold his slaves at auction to James Weldon Johnson at Tupelo's courthouse steps; Johnson had been freed two years earlier by Ulysses S. Grant during Reconstruction efforts in America following the American Civil War The town saw its peak during World War II when many local people volunteered their services to deploy within the U.S Army or Navy After World War II ended however economic conditions changed drastically throughout much of Northeast Mississippi due to industrialization while working class whites continued to experience economic decline until they lost most political power after Katrina hit in 2005 . This led to increased crime rates exacerbated by poverty combined with joblessness resulting from Katrina . However since 2009 some progress has been made with better public education opportunities making Tupelo more competitive than ever before despite continuing challenges faced such as poor infrastructure , lack of affordable housing options for low income residents , high poverty levels among minority groups including African Americans In recent years there has also been significant growth in online retail giving rise to new businesses such as Amazon Kindle bookstores
Tupelo is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Mississippi. The population was 7,823 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the second largest city in Marshall County after Jackson. The first white man to settle in what is now Tupelo was David Wilkinson in 1819. He bought land from the Chickasaw nation for $1 per acre. Wilkinson's farmstead still stands, along with other early settler homes such as Wofford House and Olde Hickory House. In 1835, Captain James Fenton built Fort Defiance on an elevated bluff overlooking present-day Tupelo. The fort served as a Confederate logistical hub during the American Civil War, supplying food and munitions to General Robert E Lee's army. During Reconstruction following the civil war, Tupelo became one of many African American towns nationally targeted by white supremacists for economic boycotts and violence. In 1871, segregation laws were enacted in Mississippi; Consequently, most African Americans left town and began moving into nearby Jackson or Meridian. By 1930, only 5% of the workforce remained black contrasted to over 90% whites in Jackson which led to accusations of "whitewashing" . In 1954, according to historian Edwin Mims Jr., "the first steps towards integration" were made when school buses began running through town; however progress was gradual throughout the 1960s due to resistance from some residents who felt they had been wrongly singled out for discrimination
