Tupelo is a small town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the county seat of Marshall County. The name "Tupelo" is a Choctaw word meaning "hopping place." The first white settlers in Tupelo were Caton and Powell (whom we call "Powell's father"). They arrived in 1814 and established a log cabin on the present site of town. After years of hard work they obtained title to 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north of town in 1828. In 1859, they donated another 725 acres (285 hectares) to the government for school purposes. In 1865, Drury built the first permanent home in town after moving from nearby Vicksburg. A year later he founded and became president of the First Baptist Church which still meets there today. In 1870, Mrs. Jno Hogg opened her own store and post office which remain open today as part of Ripley's Drug Store & Cafe! Mr. Hogg also founded Lighthouse Hill School and laid out what is now downtown Tupelo with his own funds in 1871-72! Tupelo enjoyed an exciting time during its early years as it saw growth due to new businesses opening up and people coming to live hereabouts! By 1886, business had slowed down but not stopped; it was only then that some residents began building their homes around town instead of just outside it like until then! This resulted in more traffic congestion on Main Street - something many people found inconvenient when looking for jobs or going about their everyday lives! However by 1912 most homes had been built within city limits...the only thing left to do was add some streetscape improvements including widening Main Street into a four-lane thoroughfare through downtown! Unfortunately things did not stay this way; within 10 years all but one street had been widened again leading to increased traffic congestion once again! In 1941 local artist Donnel Pugh set up his studio near where Main Street met Coliseum Drive; he continued working here until his death in 1978 at age 94%. One can imagine how busy it must have been during those days dealing with so many customers coming from all over the state just to see him create art – something few artists could even achieve today let alone back then! Many interesting events took place during those years too such as demonstrations against World War II by Japanese Americans living adjacent to town who asked for help boycotting war materials because they felt their rights were being violated…a situation still faced by certain residents today albeit with less protection from government officials!!! I will close my paper by saying that without giving away too much I believe that much about our past comes down largely to chance occurrences – good or bad – while tiny details make all the difference when history decides whether we remember them fondly or not!!!
The Tupelo community was established in 1819. The town originally consisted of a few homes and a mill. In 1829, the population had increased to around 160 people and the mill became an important source of income for the town. By 1840, there were over 350 people living in Tupelo. The cotton crop was an important factor in the town's development and by 1860, it had become one of the most prosperous communities in Mississippi.
