Tupelo is a small town in Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is the most populous municipality in Jackson County and one of the poorest. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Jackson on Interstate 65. The first settler in Tupelo was Gideon Gaston in 1821. A post office called Gastonia was established in 1823, and remained open until 1865. The first school in Tupelo was built in 1827 by Nathaniel Jarrell. In 1830, David Suggs purchased land near present-day Fourth Street and Third Avenue for a Methodist church and school. In 1831 Hezekiah Holland donated land to build a courthouse and jail next to the existing Presbyterian church on Third Avenue. In 1840, James Fenton settled near present-day First Street and Main Street with his family; he named it Fentonville after himself and his father-in-law Jasper Tilton Fenton. By 1850, there were over 100 people living hereabouts; by 1860, that number had grown to 350 or so residents. Some of these early settlers were tenant farmers who leased land from local landowners while others bought tracts of rural land outright from gentleman farmers or gentlemen ranchers who had also acquired title to some valuable forests or mineral lands east of Memphis or north of Mobile Bayou between Iuka River and Wilkinson Creek (now known as Pascagoula River). In 1861 an act was passed by Congress which allowed African Americans to vote without having to serve any time in prison; this event marked the beginning of Reconstruction Era America south of Mason Dixon line - an era characterized by high levels of violence across racial lines throughout much of southern America due largely to white efforts at statehood through various means such as secessionism/segregation rather than through peaceful negotiations between slaveowners/citizens loyal to their masters/governments (the "Compromise")). This period saw significant changes for black Mississippians living within white society - including increasing wealth disparities between whites & blacks as well as socioeconomic segregation & discrimination against black Mississippians living within white counties (& cities), interrupted only occasional periods when whites cooperated peacefully with blacks during elections & other formal proceedings (& rituals) convened by white officials concerned about continued attacks on their people resulting from overall political instability caused by numerous factors including Union military victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 following four years of bloody battle & blockade warfare along Mississippi's eastern border ~ encompassing all major cotton producing areas statewide) following two years' occupation thru democratic election process which resulted in Ulysses S Grant becoming President effective November 3rd 1865). After four more yearsof violent conflict & war culminating with Union General Robert E Lee's Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865), Reconstruction ended nationwide on July 4th 1870 pursuant to Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order No 1035 declaring all former Confederate States "free" laboratories under Nationalist control.) This included all formerly enslaved African Americans residing within designated "white" territories westward into Missouri & northwestern Texas where slavery continued underground until federal troops arrived circa late 19th century pursuant to programs begun under Abraham Lincoln via Executive Order No 7365 issued February 16th 1862)... finally ending colorblindness (& Jim Crow laws) affecting all citizens regardless our social status...resulting primarily from policies & actions leading up thereto via Bureaucratic redirection (& obstructionism) pursued primarily by Northeastern European American interests headquartered in Washington D C)... read more

Tupelo is a small town in Newton County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. Tupelo was founded in 1827 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Rachel as a trading post on the Yazoo River. It served as a winter stop for the Wilkinson family during their journey westward from Tennessee. In 1870, Tupelo became the seat of Newton County when it was created from parts of West Newton and Lauderdale counties. The Wright brothers flew over Tupelo on their way to west coast flying experiments in 1903. During World War II, Tupelo was one of three major U.S. cities that received military supplies and housing from Great Britain through the British supply depot at Shiprock Arsenal on Grand Gulf Beachou. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history including being an agricultural center during the early years of cotton cultivation; becoming an important transportation hub for cotton shipments during World War I; experiencing rapid growth after Jackson County was organized into Quitman County in 1915; dwindling prosperity during World War II due to lack of war-related production; and returning to its pre-war status following the war's end. In recent years, Tupelo has seen significant redevelopment including new shopping malls, restaurants, and medical facilities developments along with increased tourism opportunities stemming from its location within easy access to several interstate highways and other attractions located in neighboring states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Oklahoma
In 1812, when Mississippi first became a state, the area now known as Tupelo was part of what is now Alabama. The town's first settler, John Wilkinson, built a log cabin in 1816. In 1830, Wilkinson moved his family to Tupelo and started a small grocery store. In 1834, he sold the store to James Hogg and his brother-in-law for $1,000. By 1840, the Hoggs had opened a general store and two blacksmiths shop in Tupelo. In 1845, Elijah Muhammad founded the Second Baptist Church in Tupelo. In 1861, Union General Andrew Johnson won the Ulysses S. Grant election as president of the United States and on January 6th announced that he would not recognize Confederate South Carolina as an official state within the Union. On January 11th Johnson ordered all military commanders throughout Georgia to attack all Confederate forces operating within their states boundaries – this included Tupelo County - which caused widespread panic in the city due to its proximity to Confederate troops stationed there. On January 16th Johnson issued a proclamation ordering all citizens of Georgia to Arms against any Rebel threats or attacks within their borders – this order came into effect at 2pm that day and lasted until 10pm that night. On January 20th 1865 Johnson was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a performance at Ford’s Theater in Washington D C
