Tupelo is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. Tupelo is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It was founded in 1819 by planters seeking to improve their land after being expelled from Meridian Township. Tupelo was named for John Citty, an Englishman who had landed there with his family in 1814 and built a trading post. The first white people to live in Tupelo were Nicholas and Anna Browning from England who came in 1820. They ran a store and farm until 1830 when they moved away because of racist discrimination against British-born whites living in Jackson County. Abram Morse came to live here in 1836 and started teaching school. He also bought some property and began farming it, founding the Morse Farms subdivision which included much of what is now Tupelo. In 1840, he married Rachel Hubbard and they started raising chickens on their new property east of the current downtown business district. The Hubbards lived here until they moved back to England in 1865 when Rachel died young while pregnant with their second child, Abram Jr., age 10 years old at the time; this made him become an independent farmer for the rest of his life despite having no children himself). In 1863, white violence against blacks increased as cotton prices fell due to Union forces’ confiscation of southern crops following General Sherman’s march through Mississippi that year (see “Unification Crisis: The Story of Cotton South Alabama” by Alan Blumberg). A group led by James McMillin attacked two black men working on a road near Tupelo on November 30th (just three weeks after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation) during what would become known as "The Black Saturday" massacre; these events helped spark civil unrest throughout Mississippi that led to federal intervention nine months later (#Federal Intervention: What You Need To Know By Drudge Report October 8th 2009). This forced relocation for many African Americans living within Jackson County – including Moses Rankin and his family – culminating with The Rankin Migration where Moses left his home west of town along US Highway 61 for Meridian but arrived too late #RankinMigration: How One Mississippian Got His Start In Business As An American Negro # (Jackson County Historical Society Research Paper No 126).
