Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town in the southeastern United States. It is located in Jackson County, Mississippi, at the intersection of M-14 and US 61. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is known for its cotton culture and plantations that grew crops such as cotton, rice, and corn. The first Europeans to visit Tupelo were Spanish missionaries in 1521. The town was founded by French Huguenots in 1799 and named after Pierre-Charles Dupont de Nemours, an officer with the French forces who had helped defeat British forces at the Battle of Mobile Bay on July 9th of that year. Tupelo's history can be traced back to 1802 when a group of white men from Memphis traveled downriver to find land near present-day Tupelo for settlers. They named their new settlement "Tupelo" after General John Jourdan's brigade who fought against Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War (1846). During the 1830s and 1840s, Tupelo became known for its production of sugarcane which fueled much of Jackson County's economic growth during this time period. In 1857, two years after Alabama gained statehood, President James Buchanan ordered General William Tilden to take controlof Jackson County and move it westward into central Alabama so that cotton could be grown there instead of being exported to New Orleans where goods were processed into cloth or other products before they reached consumers' homes. This order caused much friction withinJackson County as many people felt they would have been better off continuing to grow crops like rice or maize rather than moving westward towards what they thought would be their doom as a county under government control%. Although some residents did leave Tupelo for Gainesville or satellite towns elsewhere within Jackson County during this time period (primarily because of lack of affordable housing), most residents remained in town until around 1870 when cotton prices began crashing due to increased international competition. By 1880, most inhabitants had either left for good or moved away altogether due to lack of opportunity in rural areas across America following Reconstruction which ended slavery throughout the South following the American Civil War (1861- 1865). In response to these changes in fortunes over a period of several decades+, local entrepreneurs set up businesses such as grocery stores/ Mercantile Exchange Bazaar & Mercantile Hall along US 61 starting about 1870; livery stables (later called "Leeds Hotel" on Court Street); sawmills; breweries; gristmills; tanneries; blacksmiths; cattle drives; post office (opened February 12th 1876 by George Wernham) ; school system including: one high school – built 1872 by Drury & Morrison [now part of Central High School]; one elementary school building - built 1886 by Prentice Bros.; three churches: First Baptist Church – built 1865 Methodist Episcopal Church - now First Baptist Temple parish seat[ closed ]; Second Baptist Church – built 1892 Methodist Episcopal Church - now Pentecostal United Methodist Church building[ open ]; Third Presbyterian Reformed Churches Building erected 1895+ First Presbyterian Reformed Churches Building erected 1901+ After World War I various businesses closed but many remain today including: Wells Fargo Bank 1930+, Ford Motor Company 1913+, Bryant Furniture 1945+, Sears Roebuck & Co 1915+, Kingsland Woodwork 1915+. Cotton production declined beginning about 1965 with flooding associated with Hurricane Agnes while other industries also experienced declines such as electric power plant closure 1964 followed by chemical plant closure 1969 then auto parts manufacturing 1970-. In recent years there has been some resurgence in agricultural production including raising chickens although soybeans are still an important cash crop..
