Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town located in south central Mississippi. The population was 9,492 at the 2010 census. Tupelo is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The history of Tupelo begins with the arrival of white people in what is now Tupelo in 1819. At that time, it was known as "Thornhill." A group of Scots-Irish immigrants named McNamara founded Thornhill on a tract of land they had acquired from a Native American chief. The colonists were able to grow crops and build homes until 1838, when they were forced to leave by General Andrew Jackson's Treaty of New Echota. They returned in 1841, but left again after Indian hostilities began. In 1865, three men - James Troup, John Peele and Michael Reese - founding fathers of Mississippi took up residence in what would become Tupelo while seeking to improve their fortunes under Reconstruction policies enacted following the American Civil War. They arrived after being driven out of Corinth by Confederate forces during the war. In 1870, they purchased land east of town from Elijah Mullins for $2 per acre ($40 per block). That same year also saw the first construction project at what would become known as Reese's Landing: a wharf on the Miskerell River which would be used to ship goods arriving from Illinois and other states across the river into Mississippi Territory (later Alabama). In 1881, Jno Matson erected a large cotton gin near present-day downtown Tupelo to process cotton imported fromAlabama and Tennessee; this gin remains one of America's most important industrial complexes northof Memphis today. In 1907 local resident Moses Flournoy organized what became known as The Sunday School Association Benevolent Society which provided education for children living in poverty or without access to public schools through Sunday school classes and home visits; membership has since continued through donations by individuals and families throughout townspeople today. A tornado struck Tupelo on May 20th 1985 killing four people within minutes; it has been called one Of Mississippian’s Most Catastrophic Crises
Tupelo was founded in 1821 by John S. Marshall and his wife, Lillie. It was named for the Tupelo river, which ran through the town. The first settler in Tupelo was James Caldwell, who built a cabin on the bank of the river. In 1824, a group of men from Alabama bought land near Tupelo and started to build a small town. The first store in Tupelo was opened by John Witherspoon in 1830. By 1840, there were over 120 people living in Tupelo. By 1850, the population had grown to over 300 people. During the Civil War, Tupelo was Union territory and therefore did not participate in battle. However, it did take part in skirmishes around town. In 1865, after the war ended, Confederate forces burned down most of Tupelo and burned down Caldwell's Cabin again soon afterwards. After that event, few settlers remained in Tupelo and it became an agricultural village with few buildings other than farmhouses until it experienced another revival starting around 1980 when some entrepreneurs decided to refurbish some of the older buildings as downtown businesses
