Starkville is known for its cotton plantations and antebellum homes. In recent years it has become a center for the arts and culture in Mississippi. The town was founded by David Sills in 1821 as a post office on the site of present-day Starkville. The first settler in what is now Starkville was James Sprague, who arrived there in 1823 with his family from Connecticut. The Spragues were among the earliest white families to live in Starkville and they became successful merchants and farmers. David Sills added manufacturing to his original holdings, becoming one of the leading yeomanry entrepreneurs of his day. By 1830 he had built four large cotton plantations which he named "Wadsworth", "Bennett", "Harrison" and "Garland". By 1840 he had acquired additional land adjoining these properties and named them "Starkville Plantations". David Sills died suddenly during an agricultural fair near Corinth on July 1, 1845 (age 53), leaving behind three daughters: Matilda (1819-1893), Fannie Woodson (1820-1902) and Rhoda Hinton (1824-1900). His wife died soon after childbirth, however, so Fannie took care of their five children until their father's death two years later at age 61. In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell occupied Starkville until Union troops moved into the community on October 25th that year following Confederate capitulation at Appomattox Court House. When slavery was abolished throughout America following Reconstruction, most of these plantations were turned over to white tenants; however some continued to operate as slave farms until 1902 when they were all purchased by African Americans who regained ownership through deeds or chains systems; this process continues to this day with tracts still lying vacant within minutes' distance of any plantation home today!
