It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Starkville begins with three men who decided to settle a grant that was given to them by General Andrew Jackson in 1818. They named their town after Colonel John Stark, an officer in the American Revolution and one of Jackson's lieutenants. The people of Starkville began purchasing land in what is now Hinds County. By 1830 they had erected a courthouse and taken on many civic duties such as providing schooling for children and founding or driving out other settlers in what is now central Hinds County. In 1837, Confederate troops pillaged the town during the Battle of Corinth and burned all but two buildings before retreating back into Tennessee without taking any prisoners or treasure. Although this event destroyed most of downtown Starkville, it also inspired Texans to start rebuilding the community and it has continued to grow since then - annexing additional counties over time while still remaining within Hinds County boundaries. Today there are more than 900 residents living in downtown Starkville (though some property remains off limits to outsiders). Many visitors come to seeand explore old architecture from what was once one of America's largest cotton plantations; visit local farms where you can find fresh eggs from hogs being cooked on open facto fires; marvel at reconstructed homes dating back to when rural Mississippi felt like a small city; or just enjoy browsing through rows upon rows of antique clotheslines strung between two stories high on Classic Street - home base for many years for locals who took pride in selling items directly from their families' looms (hence "Olde Stroudsburg").

Starkville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,612 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by John Stark and his family. Starkville is named after General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel George Stroud (1763-1836). The town was laid out as a village on the west bank of the Pascagoula River by fur trader John Dickson in 1881. The first settler to arrive was James Fenton in 1882. By 1888, all but three of the original citizens had left for other parts of the state or for Canada because of low production levels at the local cotton gin. However, some residents returned to town when they discovered new opportunities there. In 1902, a store and hotel were built and quickly became popular with locals and visitors alike. On July 1, 1907, Starkville became one of Mississippi's seventy towns when it became part of Jackson County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it incorporated into the city of Starkville under its current name.
