Starkville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 4,746 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The first people to settle in Starkville were white British colonists who arrived in 1796. The town was named for General John Stark, an American Revolutionary War officer and delegate from Randolph Township in present-day Randolph County. As early as 1837, there were two stores and one hotel in town; all operations were conducted by African Americans. In 1839, when a post office was established in nearby Meridianville (now Meridian), Starkville became the county seat. In 1851, Abram Sanders opened the first black-owned grocery store in Mississippi; it remains open today as Sanders Grocery Company. The cotton gin located near downtown produced some of the most highly colored cotton ever grown in America; many local landmarks are associated with this industry such as Vicksburg's First National Bank Building and Stroud Field Fairs Grounds (now Veterans Park). In 1870, Elijah Brougham organized a Baptist church at what is now Second Street and Broadway Avenue; he served as its first bishop until his death years later. In 1898, Mrs. Anna Moore founded her most famous charity - the Eleanor Roosevelt Home for Children - here on Jones Street just east of downtown after she lost her own home during Reconstruction period violence against African Americans living within walking distance of white households (the term "fortress" had not yet been coined). This charitable organization has played an important role throughout history both nationally and locally by helping vulnerable minority communities achieve self-sufficiency while providing education and care to children who have never known anything other than poverty or racism (Moore also donated land for Jackson State University). Starkville is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Jackson County since 1875. Starkville was founded by James W. Stark and his family in 1825 as a small Log Cabin community on the banks of the Yazoo River. The first post office in Starkville was established in 1829 and was called "Wichita." In 1836, James W. Stark donated land to establish a new town location on the north side of the river opposite where Wichita had been located for years before that. The name "Starkville" was chosen by vote of the town's citizens and became permanent when two-thirds of all property deeds were recorded with this name throughout Jackson County. In 1865, Confederate General Pee Dee Lee decided to abandon Jackson County due to Union military pressure from nearby Memphis and moved his army south into Tennessee instead. Many people who lived in or near former Confederate Territory (now Arkansas) left their homes during this time because they could not return home if battle ensued between Union forces and Confederates; many residents of Starkville did not follow suit because they remained loyal to Confederate South Carolina President Jefferson Davis throughout the war effort. In 1870, after Reconstruction ended in America, most African Americans began migrating from southern states towards Northern America during what is known as "The Great Migration." This migration led to increased competition for jobs and housing within newly developed areas such as New York City and Chicago where black families were being born for the first time into white households (known then as institutions). Shortly after World War I ended with Germany's defeat, economic changes took place throughout much of America leading to an increase in job opportunities for black workers across all sectors including mining, agriculture, manufacturing and transportation industries which would become known collectively as The New Deal Era starting around 1933–1934 when Franklin D Roosevelt became president following Election of 1932 via primary victory over incumbent John F Kennedy%. The first African American to reside in Starkville, Mississippi was Moses "Moses" Hill. Hill was born in 1817 and died in 1881. He was a slaveholder and landowner in the area that is now Starkville.
