In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces at Fort Donelson and Starkville was one of several destroyed towns in Mississippi during that campaign. In 1894, James Gist established Gist’s Mill on Lower Broad Street in downtown Starkville. The mill produced flour for local markets and made clothing for army recruits in nearby Meridian. Gist also operated a blacksmith shop and a grocery store in downtown Starkville until his death in 1902. In 1932, Harry S Truman served as Mayor of Starkville while he was President of America; he is now considered to be one of its most significant residents or mayors. In 1953, Starkville became part of Jackson County when it was created from parts of Wilkinson County and Pickens County. In 1984, Stroudsburg College relocated to Starkville from Morristown Township (now Converse Township) in northwestern Jackson County; the college has since become one of Mississippi’s leading educational institutions with over 40 campuses across 10 states including Tennessee and Alabama
