The first settlers in what would later become Starkville were white men from Georgia who came to miss the warm weather and fertile soil of their home state. They founded a small settlement on August 29, 1814, while encamped near Natchez on Highway 11A (now Wilkinson Boulevard). A post office was established at Starkville on November 3, 1815, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 15, 1907. The earliest resident families were Methodists from Tennessee who immigrated in waves starting around 1820; they began settling along Wilkinson Boulevard and Old Mission Road between 1830 and 1840s as sharecroppers working for local farmers. In 1872 descendents of these early pioneers organized as the Methodist Episcopal Church in Starkville with Reverend John Hargrave as pastor. The congregation grew rapidly after disagreements over land transactions led to a religious civil war that ended with an election victory for General William Tecumseh Sherman over Radical Republican Ulysses S. Starkville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The name Starkville comes from John Stark and his family who lived there for several years in 1814-1815. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson's army passed through the town on their way to Meridian after defeating Confederate forces at Battles of Corinth and Vicksburg. General Johnson stayed in Starkville until he reached Jackson on July 4th before returning home. The first settler in what is now Starkville was John Aiken who moved from Virginia in 1824. He built a cabin onpresent day West Main Street and named it "Aiken's Bluff". Aiken died in 1830 but his cabin still stands today as part of the downtown district. Other early settlers included James Huggins, Daniel Boone, Jacob Barnes, Joseph Nash and others. These pioneers were followed by many more during the decades that followed until present day when only a few remain residents of historic Starkville including its mayor and postmaster In 1845 Samuel Gregg came to the area from Kentucky with his wife Eliza Williamson Gregg and their five children aged 7-12 months old; they founded what would become known as Gregg's Landing which lay along present day State Road 9 south of town center between Baldwin Branch Creek and Big Creek Roads across from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (now demolished).Today this land serves as part of the registered plot for ZIP Code 72118 which includes much of what once constituted downtown Starkville including most notably Memorial Hall (now used as an office building) where pioneer families gathered for religious services before moving on to other settlements or joining Cavalry unitsWWI munitions manufacturing plant west side industrial zone
