The area that today makes up Starkville was first inhabited by the Creek Indians and was renamed for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1820, a post office called "Starkville" was established in what is now downtown Starkville. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in this town. In 1861, Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell moved into Starkville from Corinth, Mississippi to take control of the city. The Battle of Corinth took place on October 15th and 16th, 1861 and it resulted in Confederate victory. After the battle, many of these soldiers took refuge in Starkville and began construction on what would become known as "Ewell's Fort". The fort served as a military base for Confederate forces until it was surrendered to Union forces on April 9th 1865. Many businesses that grew up around "Ewell's Fort" have continued to operate today including an insurance company named Ewell & Company which still exists today; a grocery store named North Broadway Market; and a gas station/convenience store called Circle K which has been open since 1967.
Starkville is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Starkville" is derived from the Cherokee word for "place of cotton." The first settler in Starkville was John Stark, who founded the village of Starkville on November 17, 1836. He and his wife were the first white women to live in Jackson County. Other early settlers included David Gibbs and James Aiken. In 1841, Joseph Ritchie settled in what is now part of downtown Starkville. The first post office was established in Starkville on December 10, 1853. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson (1812-1899). The first mayor of Starkville was Jeptha Hogg (1851-1927). In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg made an unsuccessful attempt to attack and capture Union forces at nearby Tupelo while they were on their way to Meridian to reinforce General Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War. In 1898, Starchitects built a new county courthouse located near downtown Starkville which became known as "the Star". That same year also saw the opening of the Mississippi State Highway System as it crossed into Mississippi from Alabama through parts of south Jackson County including present-day Starkvillette and east Tupelo. One of the original SHS Boulevard signs still hangs today outside that building! The modern day city began spreading out around downtown Starkville after Interstate 20 bypassed it in 1982 when it was realigned eastward along US 61 between Meridian and Jonesboro. At that time much of easternJackson Countysouthwestside neighborhood west of I-20 belonged to rural Monroe County while most restarants and businesses within downtown area belonged to City Of Corinth which surrounded by municipality limits until 1995 when City Limits Expansion Act (CLEA) passed by Congress added portions of Livingston Parish west side including east side of I-20 just north/northwestof Old Spanish Road Bridge across White River affecting residents within municipality boundaries since then! Today there are many small businesses scattered throughout Downtown area doing odd jobs such as menial labor or providing services not typically associated with larger companies or shopping areas like Walmart or KFC etc.; but large container ships anchored off shore loading/unloading cargo for/from inland ports make occasional appearances causing environmental alarms every few months or so; making this quite an interesting place to live!!

Starkville is a city in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Claiborne County. Starkville was founded in 1881 by John H. Stark and became a town in 1902. In 1962, it became an incorporated city. The current mayor is Donnie Hathaway with a term expiring this year[1]. The history of Starkville began with settlement by John H. Stark in 1881 as part of the Jackson Purchase from France[2]. The original town site was on the south bank of the Ouachita River between present-day U Street NW and Adams Boulevard NW[3]. Mr. Stark developed his land into what is now known as "Starkville". He named his community for himself to distinguish it from other towns located near Jackson, which were called " Claiborne". In 1902, Mr. Stark donated land to make up for any financial shortfall caused by Hurricane Andrew which had struck the area during that year's presidential campaign[4]. In 1906, when Mississippi enacted its first state constitution,[5], parts of Starkville were annexed by nearby Tupelo to form that city's first municipality[6] (Tupelo had been organized as a village earlier that decade). However, Tupelo declined to incorporation because it felt that its limits did not include all of Claiborne County; so much so that when Marshall Field & Co., one of America's largest retail conglomerates, announced plans to build a large shopping center on downtown Tupelo's west end,[7] Mayor Starnes responded with public protests throughout the entire county until finally he capitulated and annexation occurred without further ado.[8] As part ofMississippi's 1907–1908General Assembly session,[9], provisions were made for creating municipalities within each parish or ward politicized since Reconstruction times where necessary due primarily to growth within black neighborhoods consequent upon white flight following Bloody Sunday (the mass shooting at Marietta College resulting in four dead and many injured).[10][11][12]:— For fiscal year 2007-2008 only -Dane Gentry reports -Starkville’s population(20K) exceeds 5% African American residents according to US Census Bureau numbers; however – under current law City Council must petition Federal government for approval before annexing any more black residents

After the battle, most of Starkville were looted by Confederate troops. In 1865, following the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, most of Mississippi became part of the Union states. However, some residents in Starkville remained loyal to Confederate forces until after the war ended. In 1868, when Reconstruction began in Mississippi, most black Mississippians were forced to leave their homes and return to poverty or slavery. However, many able-bodied men continued to live in their towns until after World War II; many members of Congress from Mississippi voted for passage of the National Origins Act Amendments (NAA) in 1948 which legalized minority permanent resident alien status within United States borders without having to reapply for citizenship every five years
