Starkville, Mississippi is a city in Stark County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. Stroud founded what would become Starkville as a town on land donated by his family, he named it for General Ulysses S. The first post office in Starkville was established in 1878; it closed in 1904. The first store built in town was operated by JB Pritchett & Son from an old house on Third Street near present day US 71st Avenue. In 1906, US 71st Avenue was widened and renamed High Street after Congressman John Fenton High who had drawn up legislation creating Starkville as a community center for Negro residents of Mississippian districts located east of Meridian Highway (now I-565). By 1910 most businesses were situated along High Street; however only one store still remains open today - H&H Grocery at 501 EHigh St., which opened December 1, 1922 In 1954, construction began on Interstate 65 between Memphis and Jackson; through this project much of present day Starkville became part ofJackson County while portions remained within Stark County until 1990 when they were combined with Gulf County into one unit under then name "Starkville/GulfCounty". During that time many large factories closed down or moved out because they could not compete with cheaper labor rates being offered by Jefferson City or Jackson counties outside of their metropolitan areas. However some heavy industry such as nickel production continued until around 2000 when new facilities were constructed south of downtown StarkVILLE including a nickel refinery owned by Rio Tinto Company now known as “Rio Tinto America” LLC

The history of Starkville is intertwined with that of Hancock County itself; both communities were founded within boundaries that have since grown wider or been absorbed by other settlements nearby. From its inception as an agricultural outpost on the edge of what is now known as Jackson County until it became an industrial center post-World War II, rural Hancock County experienced significant growth rates despite lengthy periods of local political stagnation or decline - witness such familiar pioneer namesakes as Averill Harriman (the founder of American Airlines) or Hernando DeSoto (the first white person ever recorded sightseeing through any portion of America). For much of this period - indeed throughout most stretches since Jacksonian times - white settlers lived largely apart from black Mississippians contented to live beneath their own roofing materials."
