A few men did not choose this option and stayed behind to defend their homes and towns; these individuals are known as "the Compact men." In 1862-1863, many residents left for various reasons--mainly because of Union military pressure from upriver--but by 1865 there were still about eighty residents living in Starkville. When Union troops began moving into Mississippi during April 1865, some residents chose to stay behind with their loved ones while others took cover inside churches or other buildings until finally surrendering when Union troops reached them. About sixty-five percent of those killed or wounded during the Battle of Corinth were local citizens either working or living nearby; many died trying to escape Union lines before they could be captured or killed outright. Aftermath: Many families returned home after being orderied out by Yankees but soon faced difficulties due to Reconstruction policies which favored white over black citizens. In 1868 a group led by Baptist preacher John Hance built a cotton gin near town center which became an important industry providing jobs for locals as well as new generations born after 1865 who would have access to education opportunities unavailable prior thereto
