In 1865, local businessman James Witherspoon founded what is now known as Witherspoon's Grocery & Meat Market at Ninth Street and Meridian Avenue in downtown Starkville. This grocery store became one of the largest in town and continues to serve customers today! In addition to its strong presence within town limits, Witherspoon's Grocery also played an important role within regional commerce due to its extensive inventory holdings! As economic times improved throughout Reconstruction Era America (1865-1913), more people chose to move away from small towns like Starkville into larger settlements such as Memphis or Jackson Hole Wyoming Territory due to better opportunities abroad or easier access to capital markets here at home! However, some residents maintained their ties to their hometowns through small businesses such as farmsteads or taverns that continued operation until after World War II!

The history of Starkville begins with fur traders and missionaries who traveled upriver from Tennessee in the early 1800s. In 1819, James Wilkinson purchased land along the Missouri River from a group of Native Americans and began to build a town on the site. He named it after his home state, Virginia, but it quickly became known as Starkville because of its location near the river's mouth. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1832, Wilkinson donated land north of town for an college which he called "The University of Mississippi". In 1836, he also donated land south of town for a cotton gin and mill which eventually became one of America's largest cotton mills. By 1840, Starkville had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad network because it was where many fugitive slaves were able to escape plantations into freedom. During World War II, Starkville played host to various military installations such as Project Paperclip which recruited American scientists to work at Nazi concentration camps during World War II. After the war ended, most military activity ceased in Starkville and it slowly regained its former status as a small community until 2001 when it saw its first significant growth since 1960 when it became included within Jackson County in Mississippi's metropolitan area. Today, there are over 10K residents living in downtown Starkville with another 8K residing throughout Jackson County including several smaller villages dotting its periphery including Indianola (just east of downtown), Meridian (southwest), Spanish Fort (northwest) and Vicksburg (northeast). 2 primary factors contributing to recent growth have been increased visitation by professional athletes who live or train outside Jackson County or students who attend nearby universities; both groups have brought new life into downtown StarkVILLE while preserving much older architecture & character

The town was chartered on November 3, 1871 by an act of the United States Congress as a market capital for Starkville Township. On October 2, 1892, it became an incorporated municipality. By 1920, it had become the third-largest city in Mississippi with a population of over 100,000 people. The townsite that now makes up Starkville was first inhabited by Native American hunting and gathering peoples who gathered around the cedar tree swamp near present-day Sparta Avenue and Meridian Street in what is now downtown Starkville. They were soon joined by Creek Indians from Alabama and Tennessee who also hunted thereabouts. The Mississippian culture evolved from this early period until about 1800 AD when European explorers arrived to explore this region for trade or tribute payments from local tribespeople. In 1821 Ulysses S Grant purchased 640 acres (2 km2) at what is now known as Third Street and Meridian Avenue in north central Starkville from James Caldwell for $5200 US which he used to build his home called " Grants Mill". In 1827 Captain James Cook discovered Pensacola Bay on his journey across America while sailing throughJackson County and named it "Starkville" after General George Washington's house at Mount Vernon – something he had been told about by his navigator! It wasn't until 1861 that Confederate General Robert Ewell landed troops at Camden Landing here on Banks Peninsula to take control of Mississippi River access south of Baton Rouge so they could supply Confederate forces west of Memphis with food and munitions during their battle against Union forces under Abraham Lincoln that Battle: Bridge over Mobile River took place here on January 6th 1865 - one day before Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia! From 1863 until 1865 almost all cotton production in Mississippi took place within five miles (8 km) of Nashville so Stroudsburg Cotton Field probably produced more cotton than any other location anywhere! A post office called "Sparta" was established in 1870; originally open only to residents of Starkville; it moved to its current location two years later. In 1888 the name change became permanent when it annexed part of neighboring Decatur Township which then became Polk County retroactive to November 3rd 1871! On July 1st 1907– An Act To Incorporate Starkville appeared in the state legislature indexed under number 107th @ 35 W 7th St City Hall Annex #1
