Starkville is a small town located in Jackson, Mississippi. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Hinds County. Starkville is the home of Hinds Community College and the Mississippi State Fairgrounds. In 2008, Starkville was ranked number one in America by Forbes magazine for economic development opportunities. The town has been inhabited since 1834 when pioneer John Wilkinson settled there on land he had purchased from the Chickasaw Nation. A post office called Starkville was established in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1898. In 1851, John Wilkinson's son-in-law, Gideon Wellman built a log cabin near present day Starkville to serve as his family's residence while he moved west to take up farming pursuits near Corinth, Mississippi. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman marched through Hinds County on his march towards Atlanta during the American Civil War. On July 8th of that year, General Sherman's forces passed through Hinds County and stopped at Thornton Plantation on their way southward. Thornton Plantation served as headquarters for Lieutenant Colonel James Hance’s 1st Cavalry Regiment during their stay here before continuing on their march southward towards Corinth. On September 3rd of that year (1865), Major General Thomas Fenton ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Hance’s 1st Cavalry Regiment to move forward from Thornton Plantation en route to Corinth under orders from General Sherman himself “to show our mettle and compell[e] all those who opposed us to do likewise” Hance's regiment arrived at Corinth unopposed on September 5th after marching all night long - an event which demonstrated Hance's cavalry brigade's ability tofight even if they were outnumbered two-to-one Aftermath of battle between Union troops commanded by Lt Col James Hance and Confederate troops commanded by Captured white man Yazoo Bill saw over 100 black men killed with no loss or return fire
