In 1892, the Starkville Rifle and Pistol Club was founded. It became a national organization in 1903. In 1923, it began to issue firearms licences. The club also marketed rifles and pistols to the general public. In 1934, the club changed its name to the Mississippi Rifle and Pistol Museum and Research Center.
Starkville is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Starkville were Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived in 1819. They named their new community for General James A. Starkweather, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions at Chickamauga Mountain. The town was platted by commissioners led by Hiram Hennepin on May 20, 1827. The name "Starkville" was applied to other nearby towns such as Jackson (now Jackson, Alabama) and Meridian (now Meridian, Mississippi). In 1868, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all military posts be closed in Mississippi because of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In return for voting rights and other privileges enjoyed by white citizens, black Mississippians had to leave their homes and come to live in towns such as Jacksonville and Meridian while their former residents were given land east of Memphis to build homes or businesses there. Many blacks did not have ready access to jobs or education so they decided to move into villages located near larger cities like Tupelo or Hattiesburg where they could find work and continue their education although many never managed to escape poverty or racism until after World War II when African Americans began working openly side-by-side with whites in most industries throughout America. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from Memphis to Starkville to launch a surprise attack on Union forces at Arkansas Post. However, this plan failed and Ewell's army retreated back to Tennessee. In 1901, Folsom Field became home to Mississippi State University after being donated by Dr. John Witherspoon Folsom. In 1918, Starkville became part of the new Jackson County municipality which included most of Jackson County south of Interstate 20 and east of Interstate 25A/B
