Starkville was founded in 1849 and named for General James Stark. Starkville is located on the banks of the Tallahatchie River, about north of Jackson City and east of Gulfport. The Tallahatchie River forms part of the eastern border of Starkville. The town straddles two railway lines: the Yazoo Railroad to the south and Memphis & Arkansas Railway to the north. These railways ran through what is now downtown Starkville until they were supplanted by Interstate 55 in 1955. In addition to its role as county seat, Starkville has been home to several large businesses: Chevron Corporation (headquartered there since 1951), ExxonMobil (1980s), Delta Air Lines (2001–present), FedEx Field (2005) and US Airways Group's headquarters from 2006 until its sale to National Airlines in 2016. In recent years, several new businesses have opened up in Downtown Starkville such as Livewire Coffee & Tea Company, Peanut Butter Joes Pizza Place & Donut Shop, and Dog Gone Good BBQ place known as "The Pit".

Starkville was founded in 1819 by Andrew Jackson, who became the first U.S. president. The town, located on the banks of the Mississippi River, rapidly grew during the 19th century, becoming a major center for cotton culture and trade. In 1882, Starkville was renamed Jackson County after President James K. Polk. The county seat was moved to Jackson in 1907 and later to Vicksburg. The population of Starkville peaked at around 100,000 in 1930 but declined significantly over the next several decades due to factors including social unrest and economic decline.
