In 1963, James Baldwin wrote an essay about his experience living and working in Southaven titled "The Negro In Jackson: A Report from One Side". In that essay Baldwin calls attention to some common perceptions about black people living outside Jackson which he perceives as limiting both their opportunities and overall community life there: "I have come across whites who talk about 'the coloreds' coming into town; they think it means we're all stealing jobs or something like that." He goes on to say that this incorrect perception does not reflect reality but rather reflects anger towards those who actually benefit from segregationist policies: "When you see these buses full of Negroes -- people you would never suspect of stealing goods -- coming into your town late at night with no explanation whatever, it's easy to understand why some white people might feel angry."
The first white people to live in Southaven, Mississippi were German farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. They named their community after a nearby hill, which they called "Savage" because of its high cliffs. The first business in town was a tannery, and the first school was built in 1828. By 1830, Southaven had a population of about 50 people. In 1833, Captain James Folsom founded the town's first library. The town continued to grow as businesses opened up and residents started moving into the area. In 1857, Southaven became an incorporated municipality with a population of 350 people. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army from Memphis to Southaven and began invading Union territory. The town was Siege Valley during this time and many residents chose to stay inside while their homes were destroyed or burned down. Many other towns in Mississippi followed suit and declared themselves Confederate states within days of Ewell's invasion. After the war ended, most of these towns reverted back to Union control but Southaven remained independent until it merged with Jackson on November 1,1962.
