Southaven is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Amarillo-Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southaven is located on the west bank of the Pearl River and is bordered by Yazoo City to the north, Hattiesburg to the east, Gulfport to the south, and Oxford to the west. The history of Southaven goes back more than 400 years. It was founded by General John Cushing in 1795 as a post on an Indian path that ran along present day US Highway 90 corridor from Mobile to Pensacola. At first it was called "Cushing's Fort" because General John Cushing built it there as a military post to protect his territory from Spanish incursions. In 1847, when sections of Jackson County were separated from Meridian Township and formed into new counties, Southaven became part of Meridian Township. In 1867 it again became its own municipality when all of Jackson County was reorganized into two districts - East District (later Jasper) and West District (later Hinds). In 1907 it lost its status as a township when Meridian Township was redesignated as a city limits district within Mobile County; however, Southaven continued to be part of Hinds Parish until 1970 when that parish too was redesignated as a city limits district within Mobile County and thus ceased having any municipal authority other than that exercised by Hinds Parish itself.-Southaven had been annexed by neighboring Yazoo City in 1901 after Yazoo City's incorporation.;-) The original courthouse which now stands on Adams Street serving as headquarters for both municipalities burned down in 1911 while being used for court sessions.--The current courthouse building which replaced it dates back to 1923 with brick construction and concrete finishings while also serving as office or meeting space for both municipalities before moving out onto its current site.--It has served both functions continuously ever since.--southavenonline

The town of Southaven was founded by families who left Mobile in 1837 to escape the American Civil War. The first post office in town was established on April 15, 1840. The townsite was named for General James H. Southaven, an officer of Confederate forces during the war. In 1872, a railroad line from Tupelo to Meridian passed through Southaven and developed a large commercial area around it. In 1893–94, construction began on the present-day downtown block which included the current courthouse and library building completed in 1896. That same year also saw completion of what is now First Baptist Church (1892), one of several churches built in that era around south central Mississippi as part of Methodism's " spacious new planting." In 1907–08, another rail line arrived through town and connected it with Jackson to the north; this led to increased development east of downtown including many small businesses that became known as "the blocks."
