Southaven was founded in 1824 as a small village on the outskirts of present-day Jackson. It became an important cotton center during the antebellum period and rapidly expanded after the planting of cotton crops began to increase productivity in south Mississippi in the 1830s. The community's name derives from Spanish for "south gate." When Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Jackson County, they named their new land San Miguel de Allende (Spanish for "the place where sugar cane grows"). Consequently, when American colonists first arrived in this territory they called it "New Spain" or simply "Mexico." The first permanent white settler was James Caldwell who built a house on what is today known as Caldwell Street in 1824. By 1830 much of present dayJackson County had been settled by Americans and local Native American groups, including the Mississippian-speaking Choctaw and Chickasaw nations. During that time some Africans also came to live among these early settlers; however most slaves were born into slavery within white families and did not leave until after emancipation in 1865. In 1828 Epps offered 500 acres (2 km²) of land east of current-day downtown Southaven to John Mclntyre for $1 per acre (0·50 ha). This donation made possible Mclntyre's founding of Meridian College which soon became one ofJackson County's leading educational institutions. The opening students included future Confederate president Jefferson Davis and future Ulysses S Grant; both men attended Meridian College while attending senatorial contests from MS concurrent with their education at Tuskegee University outside Atlanta, Georgia In 1829 unincorporated portions lying north and west of present day downtown Southaven were organized as Livingston Township under sovereignty given to them by territorial governor Andrew Johnson on New Year's Day 1830 pursuant to Act No 1 Of 1830 chiseled into law entitled An Act To Establish Liberty Township Within And For The Territory Of Mississippi With Respect To Negroes voted On December 3rd & 4th instant

Many residents banded together to form a resistance movement known as the Ku Klux Klan which fought against Jackson's orders throughout his presidency and into his second term (1837-1841). During Reconstruction times, Southaven grew rapidly as both white and black women gained access to education and business opportunities unavailable before reconstruction ended. During this time period, prostitution also increased significantly because freed slaves found work in local households while they awaited freedom or opportunity under new Republican rule in America. However, most people living near West Point University during these years considered themselves either students or professionals working out of town while their families lived elsewhereabouts; little attention was paid to those living near I-10/I-565 intersections where large numbers African Americans resided without access eithertoeducation or commerce
