In 1960, it became one of five American cities selected to be host sites for the Apollo 11 moon landing mission; however due to budget cuts at Air Force bases across America,[1] only two buildings - Armstrong Air Force Base Chapel and Launch Control Center - were constructed.[2] After several years as an inactive duty military installation, Southaven resumed civilian use in 1970 when it became one of Hinds County's six municipalities.[3] In December 2003, a tornado touched down near downtown Southaven after traveling from Gulfport into northwest Louisiana; [4][5][6] no injuries or damage were reported but many windows were smashed in both southbound neighborhoods and northbound commercial districts throughout the town center[7]. On January 10–11 2004,[8][9][10] another tornado struck just outside town limits killing 2 people – a mother with her 3-year-old daughter inside their home which caught fire[11]; this time there was extensive damage to homes throughout much portions east/westside streets including blocks destroyed where trees had been cut down; power outages also occurred throughout much rural central Hinds County caused by downed wires from power lines tapped by tornadoes weeks earlier during statewide storms dominated by hail size hail pellets that created major flash flooding events mostly along I-55 near Mobile

In 1865, Southaven was incorporation into the Union Territory of Mississippi.
