At Holmes' death, the business passed through several hands before it was purchased by Henry Mize in 1945. From 1945 until 1982, Mize operated the business as a single entity under the name "Southaven Rifle & Pistol Company." In 1982, Mize sold the company to Charles Hixon Jr., who continued to operate it as a separate organization until 1994 when he sold it again to John Sheppard. Since 1994, Southaven Rifle & Pistol Company has been headquartered at its current location on US 41st Street in Southaven.
Southaven is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi. It is located on the south side of the city. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code for Southaven is 38701. The first settlers in what is now Southaven were pioneers who came from Georgia in 1824 and named their new land "Cedar Grove." They built a community around an oak tree which they called Cedar Grove Station. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Mississippi and captured Mobile Bay. In order to get supplies and reinforcements, General Jackson ordered Lieutenant Colonel John A. Campbell to build a road from Corinth through Southaven to Memphis. The town was founded on May 10, 1838 by James Witherspoon and his family while he was commanding a brigade of cavalry under General Wilkinson during the Battle of Bull Run Bridge. The first store opened in 1840. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied North Africa and marched into Spanish Morocco before turning towards Spain proper where they attacked Allied forces at Las Palmas on October 20, 1942. Three days later British troops landed at Gibraltar and engaged the Japanese along with Italian units until supplies ran low; this allowed Allied commanders to take advantage of bad weather conditions that would delay any major engagements for several weeks so as not to lose men or equipment essential for Operation Torch—the amphibious invasion of Northwest Africa commanded by Admiral William Halsey that began November 8th and ended December 14th 1944—andOperation Husky (the battle against Vichy French forces). On February 11th 1943 Major General Hoyt Sullenberger became Commanding Officer USAAF Eighth Air Force mission called Operation Neptune – flying 649 combat missions over Japan between January 15-March 9 1945 using Boeing B-29 Superfortresses known as “Hercules” making up 50% of all nonstop military air travel then or since! including Okinawa! From April 1946 until its termination two years later on October 1st 1948 LtCol Wilbur Wright became commandant/director Academy when it moved from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina destroyed most school buildings there! Southaven was founded in 1871 by Mose and Jane Dixon as a stop on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. The town was named for General James K. Polk because he was then serving as President of the United States. The first post office in Southaven opened in 1872. In 1896, Southaven became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000 people. The first school district in Southaven was formed in 1899 and it had a student body of 20 students. The first doctor to serve in Southaven was Dr J C Hinton who arrived from Decatur, Georgia that same year. In 1906, two-thirds of all cotton produced in Jackson County came from south side plantations near Meridian and Vicksburg; only one-third came from within Jackson County itself according to Census figures released that year. Prior to World War II most jobs were associated with production or transportation including fishing and airmailing; few jobs remained after Pearl Harbor ended hostilities in 1941 though many changed hands during the period leading up to Katrina's landfall eight years later Many small businesses closed during this time as well: many residents left for work opportunities available outside of Mississippi afterellar In 1951–1954, when white flight started throughout the Southeast due to economic improvements brought about by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower's administration there were mass departures also but they were more sporadic than large scale departures like those experienced nationally; over 1/3rd of all Mississippians leaving between 1951 and 1954 never returned home again In 1954 when desegregation laws were passed Congress enacted legislation providing for separate schools for black children living within minority communities such as Jacksonville (then known as East Stroudsburg), Mobile (then called West Mobile),Birmingham (now Anniston) etc.; these new public schools would become known as " integrated". At this time Southaven had three churches which served black citizens: First Baptist Church operated by Reverend Fenton Key Dodds & Mrs Florence Key Dodds; Methodist Episcopal Church operated by ministers John Witherspoon & Alice Bowen Collins; African Methodist Episcopal Zion congregation operate by Ministers Joe Hawkins & Julius Lester Johnson Sr.). integration began slowly but surely with buses bringing black students into white public schools starting backdates prior to 1957 All private schoolsChoice Academy Charter School Inc., Emmanuel Christian School Inc., Mount Carmel School have been shut down since summer 2007 due to lack of enrollment
The city of Southaven, Mississippi was founded in 1821 by Captain John marching his company of soldiers through the area looking for a new home. The town grew rapidly, and in 1848 it became the county seat of Jackson County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee made an attempt to capture Southaven and its arsenal. The Union forces drove back the Confederate attackers, and Southaven quickly regained its importance as a commercial center. In 1924, following World War II, Southaven became an important node in the development of the Mississippi Delta agricultural region.
