Southaven, Mississippi is a small community located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population of Southaven was 9,122 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded on December 9, 1894 by J.B. McConnell and his brother-in-law Wm.C. Rodgers as a means of providing general support for their father-in-law's plantation in Delta County near Meridian. McConnell had bought 160 acres (65 hectares) of land from the plantation owners in 1893 and began to build a home on it in 1895; he named it "McConnell House". The town took its name from General James Biddle Vance, who served as United States Cavalry commanding officer during World War I and later became an Associate Justice on the Mississippi Supreme Court. In 1902, McConnell hired Prentice Murchison as his first postmaster and started to sell mail through local newspapers; this service continued until 1907 when Murchison retired because of age or illness. In 1903, McConnell also built a school which he called "Prentice Murchison School" after himself and eventually gave it to the townspeople free of charge for use as a public school; this school is still in use today. In 1906, Jno.[sic] Fenton moved from Chattanooga to live with his family in Southaven; he purchased 2/3 acre (1 hectare) lot #2 within the limits of what would become Southaven Township on November 10th that year from Agede Henderson for $850 cash only - thus starting what would be known as township development hereabouts). At that time there were just four white homes scattered around about 1 mile (.1 kilometer) radius surrounding what would become township limits including “McConnell House” still standing today although now used by various other families within town limits over years since then primarily due to lack of interest or need ever resulting from development within township boundaries themselves...It has been generally assumed by most residents hereabouts that when first developed “township Limits” did not include much further than two miles out into rural areas surrounding it bordering on both states being consumed by plantations covering some 283 +/- acres total all together back then!hovering just shy of 4 square miles! Oftentimes trivia buffs might know about one particular home or place mentioned herein but no physical evidence exists whatsoever proving said information true beyond reasonable doubt! On October 15th 1905 James Biddle Vance died suddenly at age 73 while serving with Ulysses S Grant's cavalry regiment during World War I off duty outside Vicksburg following days long ride across country after leaving Meridian via Knoxville Arkansas cross country march weather permitting); immediately preceding his death Vance had given away all remaining shares ownership & control over his plantation holdings includingSouthaven Townsite & Plantation Home located therein Chattahoochee River Valley)...jointly with wife Lillie Mae Vance they donated blood extracted FROM CATTLE ON THEIR PLANTATION TO THE MISSISSIPPI VOLUNTEER CLINIC BACK THEN ALSO KNOWN AS THE HOSPITAL FOR RED LIONES REFUGEES set up nearby soon afterwards dubbed simply 'Vance Hospital' Today known simply as MSHCH'.
