Southaven is a city in Butler County, Mississippi. The population was 18,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Southaven is located on I-55 and United States Route 82. The site of present day Southaven was first settled in 1818 by two Frenchmen, Pierre Laclede and Antoine Demarest, as part of a land grant to Captain John Chilton from the Mississippian nation known as the Choctaw Nation. The town was platted in 1837 by Isaac Hicks, who named it after his father-in-law, Elijah Craighead (1785–1865). In 1939, a tornado damaged sixteen homes in downtown Southaven; it was one of only two tornadoes ever to hit Mississippi that year. On November 21, 1958,[1] an EF4 tornado struck Dickinson County near Jackson along US 61 and FM 5130 about 15 miles east of Jackson; it destroyed most of both townships and Pass Christian with extensive damage beyond that seen in Jackson or Dickinson counties alone. In all, seventeen people were killed (eleven men and six women), ninety-six were injured (twenty-six total), and five thousand dollars worth of property damage was done.[2] Cottonseed futures prices were affected particularly severely because large areas within Dickinson and Jackson counties were burned up; over $1 million worth of crops were lost.[3][4] Bryan Stevenson served as attorney general for Mississippi during much of this time frame before becoming U.S. Senator from Alabama in 1992 when Jesse Helms retired from office following his conviction on corruption charges. At the time he vacated his Senate seat to run for governor against Doug Jones instead[5]. On December 12th 2018 Stevenson announced he will challenge Jones for senate again next year
