Southaven is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,564 at the 2010 census. Southaven is the county seat and largest city of Hinds County. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Hinds County was made by Captain John Ledbetter and his followers on December 3, 1785, when they founded a small cabin on a bluff overlooking the mouth of the Yazoo River. A year later they built an official log house and named it "Hindsborough". In 1801 Captain John Ledbetter organized a petition to gain incorporation as a town from its residents who were growing crops in surrounding rural areas. On July 10, 1802 Southaven was incorporated as an independent village with a plenary Session held at which Alonzo Payne (the founder of Pontotoc) presided over proceedings. The town charter granted powers to erect fences and build roads; establish schools; provide fire arms for militia purposes; assess taxes upon inhabitants; and make decisions respecting internal improvements such as bridges and canals. In 1805 James Kincaid arrived from Kentucky with his family to take up land grant near Fort Gibson in present-day Arkansas state line territory. He built Kincaid Station on this site where he erected brick buildings that still stand today - Kincaid Station Museum is open daily from 9am-4pm (except Mondays). Southaven, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It was founded in 1827 by Nicholas Wilkinson and his family. The Wilkinson family had come from nearby Meridian. Southaven was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been elected president in 1828. In 1865, the town was burned to the ground by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. It recommenced Reconstruction in 1865 and remained a white community until 1991 when it became an all-black community. The population of Southaven at the time of its incorporation as an all-black community was 1,751 people. The first black school in Mississippi opened in Southaven on October 6, 1951. It was called "Boys' High School." At that time only 10% of integrated schools were open to Negro children across the state of Mississippi because of segregationist policies adopted by governor John Bel Edwards and his administration.
