Since the early 1800s, Southaven, Mississippi has been a stronghold of firearms enthusiasts. In 1924 Dr J Ransom imported several handguns from Europe and set up shop in town under the name "Ransom Guns." Gun sales increased during World War II because people felt that owning guns would protect them from potential Axis aggression or invasion by Germany or Japan. This patriotic sentiment was also reflected in local law enforcement policies which allowed citizens to possess only non-automatic handguns capable of firing single rounds without stopping short like shotguns or rifles (known as 3A limitations). After the war ended there was an increase demand for new police officers because fewer civilians were able to own firearms due to post-war disarmament laws passed by Congress following World War II (known as National Firearms Act). Southaven, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 24,153 at the 2010 census. The name of Southaven comes from an Indian word meaning "fortress." The first white settlers in what is now Southaven were Dutch farmers and their families who settled around 1770. By 1810, English colonists had also arrived and by 1821 Southaven had become a part of Jackson County. When the U.S. Civil War began in 1861, many Mississippians chose to support the Confederacy because they believed that slavery was right and should be defended. However, most of the town's residents turned out for Union forces when they joined Battle Creek Campaign on April 12-13., 1862 near Corinth, Mississippi. After Union troops recaptured Corinth on April 17th, Confederate General Robert Ewing ordered his army to march through Southaven and into Corinth unopposed; however, this order was disobeyed and some Confederate soldiers entered town while it was still under Union control. As a result of this incident known as "the Battle of Corinth", about 200 citizens were killed or wounded and 2 churches were burned down in what is now known as "The African American Community Massacre". After the war ended in 1865, Reconstruction took hold in America and many former slaves were Freedmen's Bureau agents (agents who helped free slaves) started arriving to help settle new black communities throughout Mississippi beginning in 1865. In 1870–71 Southaven had a population of 100 whites and 25 blacks living together according to one source; however by 1880 there were only 5 whites living among 93 blacks hereabouts permanent residents). This process continued until all black people living within city limits were forced out between 1890-1930 when segregation laws became firmly entrenched across America due to efforts by southern white supremacists during World War II
