Southaven, Mississippi is a town in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. The history of Southaven goes back to 1853 when it was known as "Athens". It was named after Athens, Alabama and its first postmaster was Colonel John P. Atchison. In 1871, Southaven became part of the newly created Wilkinson County and changed its name to Southaven in honor of General James K. Polk who had been elected President in 1848. In 1907, the Lewis-Clark National Monument was established in central Delaware County and included portions of what are now Southaven and Athens municipalities as well as parts of Tunica and Pike Counties within Wilkinson County. As a result of this designation by Congress, many aspects of local life were constrained or changed including land use laws which regulated development near national monuments on public land. With the creation of the monument came increased visitation from tourists who wanted to see the natural beauty around them while also experiencing some unique aspects such as ceremonial fires used for dance ceremonies at various sites within the park boundaries The Lewis-Clark National Monument has since been reduced in size but still contains much that makes it special including more than 2 million acres (8 thousand km2) of undeveloped forest which forms one third of the total park area
Southaven is a census-designated place in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 1,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven was named for General Andrew Johnson, who served as U.S. president from 1847 to 1851 and as secretary of War from 1861 to 1865
