The first settlers in what is now Southaven were white men from Tennessee who came to the area in 1819 to prospect for gold. The town was platted by James Ewing in 1824 as part of a survey for Red River Valley land that he had purchased from the Chickasaw Indian Nation. In 1830, John Crain founded the community of Meridian which became the county seat of East Mississippi County. In 1865, Confederate General Andrew Johnson ordered his forces to burn Meridian because it supported Union troops overSouthern sympathizers. Johnson's order led to more than 30 homes being burned and 4 people killed in what is known as "the Meridian burning". Southaven was one of several towns within Jackson County that were destroyed during an attack by Union troops on September 25, 1881. More than 20 homes and businesses were destroyed when Confederate soldiers detonated three homemade bombs while attacking an ammunition depot west of Jacksonville Church; current day US 21 runs through most of this territory as well as parts of Jackson and Hinds Counties. After Reconstruction ended in America's south following World War II many African Americans moved into areas formerly controlled by white supremacists such as Ku Klux Klan members in Jackson County after being promised free housing and education opportunities under various programs such as "New Deal" policies enacted by Franklin D Roosevelt after the war ended. This migration created new tensions between black residents living within white-owned neighborhoods and those living far away from these areas while also bringing new technologies into early-20th century American society which often shaped relationships between races much differently than did previous centuries

The town was founded in 1836 by General Andrew Jackson and named for his daughter-in-law Sarah Southaven. The first white person to settle in what is now Southaven was John Dunbar, who arrived in 1797 and built the first permanent cabin there. In 1837, Southaven became part of Jackson County when it was created from parts of Newton and Lauderdale counties. In 1868, the railroad arrived in Southaven and changed everything; businesses began to boom as people came to trade goods with new arrivals from all over the country. By 1870, Southaven had a banking system and a school system that grew up around it. In 1901, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down many homes near downtown Southaven because they were believed to be Confederate munitions caches. This event has been called "the most destructive civil disturbance on black Mississippians' history". After the war ended, many black refugees moved into town from Arkansas and other states facing Reconstruction efforts which led to heavy African American desegregation throughout much of Mississippi: schools were closed without proper replacement resources available or compensation given; jobs were scarce so African Americans started working as sharecroppers or small farmers; violence continued against both whites and blacks; lynchings occurred (occasionally resulting in death); some 400 black families fled into Missouri after an expedition composed mostly of white men descended on their home state looking for them). Many residents returned soon afterwards but others stayed behind permanently due largely to fear that they would not be welcome back again once Reconstruction ended - this fear was stoked by Ku Klux Klan members who terrorized all blacks living within sight of white people while they still could) Some 20 years later (in 1978), popular singer Elvis Presley set foot inside one of those original 200 black family residences located just off US Highway 90A outside of town limits - heading straight for one whereupon local legend has it that several Ku Klux Klan members followed him inside driving away any potential witnesses! Not long afterwards (following another White flight across state lines), Presley's mother Gladys bought her childhood home back from her father Al interchangeably housing both properties until her death in 1984......
