Southaven is a town located in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,614 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The first permanent settler in what is now Southaven was James Hogg who arrived in 1796. He and his family were among the earliest to settle the area that would become Hinds County. They founded a trading post on the banks of Mobile Bayou, which remain an important commercial center today. In 1824, John Rankin built a cabin near what is now downtown Southaven and named it after himself – Rankin's Station. A year later he married Sarah Howell and began to build additional cabins along Mobile Bayou for their families and others pioneer settlers who had come to explore this new land. By 1830, Rankin's Station had become known as Rankinville after him and his wife. In 1838, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered all Native American tribes must leave their lands within five miles of any white settlement in order to be considered for citizenship or inclusion in the Indian Removal Act of 1830 – an event which would lead to many African Americans moving into Mississippian areas during this time period including Southaven. As part of Johnson's orders, all Cherokee leaders were sent westward with their families under escort by Ulysses S Grant until they reached Texas on May 15th, 1839. Many Cherokees did not make it out alive due to disease or capture by Ulysses S Grant's forces while they were being transportedwestward across America on horseback (the so-called "Trail of Tears"). James Hogg Jr., one of those killed during Cherokee removal from Alabama settled permanently in what is now downtown Southaven around 1840 with his wife Martha Jane Hale Hogg (#4). James Jr.'s father James Hogg Sr., also settled here around 1800–1810 when he purchased 640 acres along Mobile Bayou from Captain John Smithson (1777-1851), brother-in-law of General Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). The elder Hogg operated two stores near present day Meridian Street and Bush Avenue before retiring around 1840; his son James J.Hogg took over operations following his father's death about 1850 timeframe From there until 1907 much development took place east/southwest side between Meridian Street & Gadsden Road only later becoming NW corner Of US Highways 9 & 40 . Also prior To 1907 much development took Place at current location southwesterly corner Of Meridian Stade lot
