Spanish explorers also visited in this period; they called it San Juan Bautista de los Caminos (St Anthony's Path) because of its location near where Baptist missionaries had been established in 1692 by John Wesley and other Methodist ministers. In 1807, General Andrew Jackson led an army through central Mississippi during his campaign for president against Charles Brocket Swayne and James K bringing over 1 million acres from Indian Territory to become Union territory underJackson's administration as part of the Compromise of 1850 which ended slavery in America In 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Meridian with his cavalry and burned federal buildings includingJackson's personal home at Carrollton which destroyed much equipment used by Union forces stationed there including cannons In 1865 white supremacist Ku Klux Klan members invaded southern Mississippians seeking revenge for their victory over black Americans at Battle Bridge Overlooking Memphis two years earlier

There are also several schools within Southaven's boundaries: Gibson Middle School, which serves students from pre-K to 8th grade; John Marshall High School, which serves students from 9th to 12th grade; and Meridian Elementary School, which serves students from 1st through 4th grades. The city of Southaven was founded by General James Moultrie on January 16, 1838 as a settlement east of present-day Mount Pleasant on what is now known as Bankhead Road near the Pearl River. The name was changed to its current name after Confederate General Braxton Bragg arrived at the town on April 10, 1848 with 7 Companies of Infantry under his command seeking refuge from Federal forces occupying Corinth (then Uniontown). On May 3rd of that year Bragg called an impromptu meeting at the Masonic Lodge in town and ordered all men 21 years or older to assemble outside for instruction in drill by Captain Jenson Aiken commanding Company I Third United States Infantry Regiment (). The meeting resulted in establishment of a militia company made up entirely of young men under 21 years old who were ordered not only to attend drill but also be armed and trained for future combat against Federal troops should they ever seek passage through or enter into Southaven uninvited. This ordinance remains today oneofthe most important moments associated with municipal government within Jackson County until this day - it marked the beginning of organized military resistance against Federal authorities throughout much ofJackson County during both Civil War era & afterwards

They named their new town after General Andrew Jackson and his soldiers who had fought in the War for Independence. The city grew quickly and soon became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1912, Southaven was incorporated as a municipality. The city continued to grow and expand until it reached its current size in 1958.
