In the early 1800s, Southaven was a thriving town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The area that now makes up Southaven was first settled by English colonists in the late 17th century and became a part of Jackson County in 1813. By 1836, the population of Southaven had grown to over 10,000 people and it had its own school system. However, during the early years of the American Civil War, gun laser technology was not yet common or accessible to most people. Nonetheless, on April 14th 1861, Union soldiers entered Southaven and began firing upon residents. One woman who resided in the town at that time was Sarah Goodloe. Mrs. Goodloe quickly ran into her home to pick up her children and flee the scene; she later recounted that “the rebels immediately opened fire on us with their small arms” (Goodloe 1971). With so many bullets flying around her home, Mrs. Goodloe decided to take cover inside her house until reinforcements arrived. As soon as Union forces realized they were under attack from Confederate troops, they began withdrawal; however, some of their weapons still fired upon civilian targets inside Southaven (Goodloe 1971). In total, seven people were killed as a result of this gunfire; four civilians and three Confederate soldiers (Farrell 1951). It is interesting to note that despite being under attack from Union forces at the time, few citizens were actually injured or killed as a result of these gunshots. This indicates that gun lasers were not yet widely available or used for military purposes at this point in history! Despite this lack of availability or usage for guns lasers during the early days of the American Civil War – which possibly contributed to its low casualty rate – gun lasers eventually became more commonplace due to their potential benefits for warfare and security purposes.
