Southaven is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hattiesburg–Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southaven is located on the east bank of the Pearl River, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of downtown Jackson and 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Memphis. The first white settlers in what is now Southaven were men from Georgia who arrived in 1814. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Pearl River and named it for their new home state: Savannah, Georgia. In 1830, two brothers from Tennessee bought land here and started a cotton plantation called White Sands. They invited other farmers to share their success but only four people came and raised cotton until 1851 when John Lunsford purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) near modern-day Southaven and began cultivating it himself. He named his farm "Lunsford" after President James K. Polk's brother Lucius Alonzo Lunsford Jr., then an congressman from Illinois who had been influential in helping Polk win election as president in early 1850 against Andrew Johnson Lunsford became one of Jackson County's most successful farmers and ranchers through his ownership of many large tracts of land that yielded high profits during the antebellum period. He also developed corduroy roads across his property which enabled him to shipment goods quickly to market throughout much of Mississippi Territory In 1861, Lunsford married Miss Belle Boydell – daughter of Colonel Robert Boydell – making her one thirdrd owner or holder of all African American slaves held by Mriles & Company at any time prior to 1865 inclusive; she would be free upon her marriage When Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Chickamauga on September 2nd 1863, General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all black soldiers within five miles (8 km) thereof must retreat or fight en masse under whatever terms they could find themselves under General Forrest appointed Captain John Pemberton as commander for this area including Southaven whereuponCaptain Pemberton ordered General Forrest's slave driver/LP man Major Christopher Medenbach to take negroes out into surrounding countryside adjacent to White Sands plantations with orders not ferrying them back home alive if discovered so he could extract information surrendered by rebels Captain Medenbach did this successfully enough that few were found but some were captured and executed including Mrs Masterson’s son Simeon who was living with Capt Medenbach’s family when he was taken prisoner

Southaven, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,048 at the 2010 census. It was laid out by Asa Hutchinson on land he acquired from the Chickasaw Nation in 1818. The name comes from an all-white militia unit called "the Southaven Rangers". In 1830, when Hutchinson organized what became known as the Perry Party to challenge Andrew Jackson for president, Southaven served as his headquarters. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, most of Mississippi reverted to white rule and African Americans were not allowed to vote or own property until after World War II. However, some black residents of Southaven continued to struggle against Jim Crow laws until the early 1960s when they gained rights under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, much of Southaven is revitalized with mixed-race residents and a business community.

In the early 1800s, Southaven was known as a strategic location due to its position on the Mississippian River and its access to resources such as timber and slaves.
