In 1865, Southaven had a population of only 2 people. The first gun in the town was a shotgun. In 1876, a pistol was purchased by G.W. Griggs and Wm. Henson from A.J. Sprague in New Orleans for $175 In 1885, Jameson & Mason rifle company was organized with six rifles and twenty rounds of ammunition In 1903, Fenton Arms company established in town with twelve shotguns and eighty rounds of ammunition On May 10th 1906 an Iver Johnson revolver manufactured by J & J Smiths arrived at the depot from Mobile Depot with intent to buy arms for the city militia

The first guns to use barrels that could hold more than 8 rounds were made in the late 18th century by a team of engineers led by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first successful firearms using this type of barrel were created in 1795 by George Washington and James Thacher, both American Revolutionary War generals.
