In 1857, the first shoot-out took place in the town when two groups of Confederate troops fought for control of a supply depot. Over time, Southaven became known as one of the leading gun friendly towns in America. In 1975, Southaven’s mayor passed a ordinance banning handguns from all public areas of the town. This move was made after an attack on a local grocery store that left four people dead and several others injured. Since then, handguns have not been allowed within any public buildings or streets within the town limits. This policy has remained in effect to this day. Southaven is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 12,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven is the seat of Hinds County government and has an estimated population growth rate of 3.5%. The city's economy depends on agriculture and manufacturing. The first known permanent settlers in what is now Southaven were Frenchmen who established a trading post there in 1796. The first white man to live in present-day Southaven was James White, who platted the town in 1821 and named it after himself. A cotton plantation by Colonel John Chilton became one of the largest slaveholders in Mississippi during Reconstruction; its owner made much money from shipping enslaved men to plantations outside of Mississippi for work on cotton plantations. In 1892, Jno Ewing donated land to build an airport and shopping center near Southaven; this led to increased development around the airport over time, including several high-rise buildings today that rise above downtown Southaven skyline. During World War II, many people from south Alabama came down south to fight with various units throughout Southeast Asia as part of Roosevelt's New Deal program called "The Big Three." As a result of their service here (and elsewhere), many residents have Japanese bloodlines running through their veins which can be seen plainly enough when looking at faces ornaments or tattoos that are commonly found hereabouts - something not generally found among Mississippians./p> In 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10644 which banned discrimination against African Americans within military forces everywhere within the United States., This order changed American history as it set forth policies which prohibited racist behavior against non-white Americans by all branches of American society as well as any US military personnel stationed abroad.. On February 15th 1948 two blacksmiths named Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston fought for control over segregated parking spaces near Jackson's plant where they worked - Liston won! After years of demonstrations and lawsuits throughout America by African Americans seeking equal rights under law this event symbolized progress for black Americans - but sadly still required effort from everyday citizens willing to stand up for change

Southaven is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven was founded by Yankees who fled New York City during the American Revolution. The first post office in Southaven was established on November 1, 1809. The community of Southaven developed around a small cotton plantation that operated from 1793 to 1820 by John Stephenson and his wife Elizabeth Goode Stephenson. The Stephenson family had come to Mississippi from Rhode Island in 1786 aboard the "Providence" and arrived at what is now Meridian about two years later. They were among the earliest white settlers in what would becomeJackson County and are credited with helping lay out most of present-day Southaven Includes portions of both Jackson and Meridian Counties To this day many people in Southaven celebrate Fourth of July as Independence Day because their ancestor John Stephenson helped make that possible by owning land near Meridian which became home to one of America's first taverns - the Cotton Exchange Tavern (later known as Cross Keys) In 1917, General James Pemberton ordered all Negroes out of Jackson County except for those working on public works projects or living within certain boundaries set by him outside Greenwood Village limits This order led to several riots throughout the county beginning on July 8th whenNegroes looted local stores including a grocery store and Presbyterian Church before being pushed back by whites who used tear gas grenades to quell any violence On October 6th following an investigation into these riots conducted by Lt Colonel Newton Howells tribunal, General Pemberton issued another order providing for African Americans working on public projects or living within white areas be granted amnesty if they showed evidence of economic necessity such as owning property or having children born within five years This order also allowed Negro farmers inside white areas without fear of attack so long as they planted cotton crops and paid taxes . As a result of this policy change efforts were made to integrate some black families into white society but progress stalled due primarily to lack of resources
Southaven was founded in 1818 by William H. Seward and his brother, John Seward. The town grew rapidly due to the cotton trade, reaching a population of over 1,500 by 1828. In 1836, the townsfolk voted to secede from Mississippi and form a separate state called Alabama. Southaven's new government had no power to levy taxes or make decisions regarding local affairs, leaving it vulnerable to exploitation by secessionists. The town was sacked and burned in 1839 during the Battle of Blackstocks; its residents were forced to flee into exile. In 1861, after Union forces captured Mobile Bay and began besieging Confederate forces at Fort Sumter, Southaven surrendered without an offer of surrender terms. Its citizens were deported on trains headed for what would become Tennessee.
