It is the largest city in Lamar County and the second-largest city in Mississippi after Jackson. The first permanent settler in Southaven was Jacob Hogg on April 1, 1818. He founded a farmstead south of present-day Southaven Creek, about two miles east of what would become town limits today. From this farmstead Hogg developed a small community that prospered for many years until cotton ginners came to the area and took away most of their crop production in the early 19th century. A mill built by John Muir around 1875 became one of the earliest industrial facilities in central Mississippi, producing flour and other agricultural products for local markets
