Southaven is a city in Limestone County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Limestone County. The town was founded by African Americans in 1867 as a slave market for cotton and other crops in what is now rural Limestone County. The first store was built on the present site of Southaven on October 16, 1867 by Samuel Lowe and his brother-in-law James White. By 1865, slaves had been freed from plantations in Alabama and Georgia, bringing new life to Southaven and its black residents. In 1870, white men began to purchase land around Southaven for development as an agricultural society known as the "Dixie Cotton Planters'" Association. They Shade Hill Station (), east of town on Shade Hill Road (), became one of their primary cotton plantations until it was sold to local farmers in 1916. In 1874–75, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's army passed through central Mississippi en route to Memphis during the Battle of Vicksburg; many black Mississippians were among his troops. Many blacks who had not evacuated before the battle joined him when he arrived in Meridian after surrendering at Vicksburg; some became prisoners of war or later died from disease or malnutrition while living under Union occupation outside Jackson proper. As a result of this contact with white people and military personnel, most African Americans grew up illiterate or functionally illiterate and did not know their place within American society. This lack of literacy allowed them to be easily manipulated by whites as labor resources during Reconstruction Periods (1865-1913). In 1881ache Blacksmith Shop opened near downtown with two forge smiths working out a trade with white men for turning out weapons for Confederate soldiers fighting against US forces during Reconstruction period (). That same year saw another important milestone when Gullah children born into slavery started school northeast of town (). From then until World War II (1914-1945), majority black families lived within walking distance of downtown which led to creation of many businesses along that corridor including Coca Cola Bottling Works (1920) / Neptune Coffee Company (1928) / First National Bank & Trust Company (1930), Sun Oil Refinery (), Bearden Rubber Plantation ()/Bearden Estate () (/ Bearden Rubber Factory ()); Delta Airlines Flight 1549 landed at nearby Gulfport Municipal Airport (); oil production commenced near Pearl River Bayou (); brickyards were established along Pearl River Boulevard (); plantation owners erected brick homes ()/condominiums (); south end area developing into large shopping center ; Negro League pitcher Jackie Robinson played Minor League ball there from 1947-1948
Southaven is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,913 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Southaven were Creeks who hunted and gathered game on the land that now includes the city. They built their homes out of logs and earth dugout canoes until they started building brick homes in 1872. In 1883, a group of white men from Tennessee came down the Yazoo River to look for a place to settle after hearing about Indians living near Vicksburg. They saw an opening in the woods and built a cabin there called "Mosesville." They named their town after Moses Lincoln because he had helped them find refuge when they were chased out of their home by Native Americans. In 1907, Jens Svetoft established a flour mill in what is now Southaven and began marketing his flour throughout Smith County. The mill became one of the largest mills in Mississippi before it closed in 1967. At its closure, it produced over 100 million pounds (40 metric tons) of flour each year which helped make Southaven one of the most important cities in Jackson during that time period. In 1951, construction began on Jackson's first bypass road which would eventually become I-10 . The bypass would help reduce traffic congestion around downtown Jackson while also helping increase economic development around Southaven and other parts ofJackson Township including Meridian Hill and Hoover City
