The town was founded in 1892 by James Purdy and his family. The first post office was established in 1895. In 1904, the name of the town was changed to Southaven after General John C. Pettus, who fought in World War I with the United States Army and later became a U.S Senator from Tennessee. In 1938, following Brown v Board of Education (1938), integrated schools were open in all Jackson County municipalities except for Southaven which remained white until 1954 when all integrates schools were closed statewide due to Supreme Court rulings Banning Segregation on public education grounds as unconstitutional. The community experienced economic decline beginning in the 1970s as a result of oil exploration conducted by Gulf Oil Corporation in nearby Pearl River County; however, it has since bounced back and achieved significant development including a new high school that opened its doors in 2007 and an apartment complex completed in 2009 named Park Place Apartments after Mayor Ernest Hinson's father, Clyde Hinson Sr., who had been instrumental in developing parkland near town center into what is now one of Mississippi's most popular recreation areas complete with tennis courts, playgrounds and other recreational amenities for residents as well as visitors during summertime months. In 2013-14, much to local outcry over plans to demolish several homes within walking distance of downtown for use as parking lots for a new clinic being built by Medical Solutions HealthCare LLP - which would have uninhabitable structures on two adjacent parcels adjacent to existing homes used only for storage - Mayor Ernest Hinson announced that no such demolition will take place; instead he will explore ways that improvements can be made to make citySquare more pedestrian friendly.
